Re: WTF.....
...a little food for thought; I have been lurking a while, looking at what you all guys were posting about this. I admit - ahem...- that I have a compulsory disease about bidding on goodies on the dreaded 'bay. And I don't blame anyone for this, other than me. (applause.... some people cry.... BRAVOOO). I tend, as most of you guys, to discern the nice from the not, the rare and original from the cr@p. And I have bought a lot of it. Sold a little as well.
What I shake my head at, by reading all this, is the stubborn attitude that people interested (yes, more or less, you were still watching these bits, hoping that they were going to "go" for affordable money) in something, will not accept that they were not the only "discoverers" of these same items on eBay. eBay is an auctionplace, a marketplace, a playgroud and, in a way, also a benchmark. From now on you'll hear people chatting amiably at Beaulieu "yes, pal, sorry, these spark plug caps are a hundred each, or they are going on eBay...", the seller taking its risk in "holding" a price, hoping to raise a few more.
Well.... if you were the seller, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? And don't tell me you are an absolute philantropist that would rather see that the caps went to "a good home". Bull..
The facts are: there are many players. Internet is a great information resource, but it works sometimes against us. Everybody is there hoping to get a few more quid. The value of a complete and CORRECT car are -still barely- raising. There are a lot of horrible reproduction bits around.
So this all means that the restorers try harder and aim for the very best, paying the price.
Now, your thoughts, please....

Re: WTF.....
There'a absolutely no arguing with it Paul, 'the market' , it is what it is. The only amusement (or bemusement) I get personally is when seemingly 'ordinary' items go for big money, like the Paddy Hopkirk grill buttons, which is what this thread was all about I think originally but turned into something more moany. It's also been an education in some part about certain parts I never knew were that rare as I'm sure it has for many others.

Re: WTF.....
I see it as limited supply and (at present) a fairly good demand. It is also I believe a car parts life cycle something becomes sort after as it decreases in existance.
Hinesight is a wonderful thing - as you get older you realise its worth storing things but usually by that time you have missed the boat.
1275gt's and any 10" wheel mini wheel be next (next 5 years) - thats my prediction if only space and funding was not an issue
