Sad loss of a freind

Post by Steve A »

A good freind of mine and i believe a member of this forum Simon Smith passed away a little over month ago and i was just looking at some pics from June when we drove to lemans in the minis. I thought i would share some with you. The Blue mk2 was originally my car which i sold to Simon but due to health problems he was kind enough to let me drive it to lemans and back via Belgium (but that was a navigational error that i have yet to live down)

A few more, anyone who has camped at lemans would have probably been greeted the same way.

Looks like a great trip!

No one really leaves when we can keep or happy memories of them alive.

He was one of the good guys, a few months back he popped around to help me fit my petrol tanks and we must have had them in and out ten times. He never complained once and when i had problems fitting my new loom he offered to get his car dropped around so i could check the connections.
He always wanted my mk2 and when i decided that i was going mk1 i knew he would look after my old car so there was only one choice. He loved the car soon adding his own touches including a les leston wheel and nice rev counter.
Not long after buying the car he had an epeleptic fit and had to surrender his licence which was a real kick in the teeth. He had suffered when we were teenagers but medication had got it under control and he hadn't had a fit for years.
When we went to Lemans he asked if he could drive the car for a bit and i am so glad i let him.
He died quite suddenly aged 43 from what they think was a seizure. Far too young.
He is greatly missed by our local mini gang (all the lemans mini gang were from Walsall).
We all drove the minis at the funeral and his brother who is keeping the car has vowed to come on future runs with us.
As Mark said he will always be around in our hearts and our memories.
