perhaps all these silly prices are just cover ups for dodgey deals... perhaps when the grill buttons arrive they have a couple of kilos of crack in the packet too...??

Re: WTF.....
George it's not a big surprise to see rare '59 parts fetching good money, Mark's point is that plug caps like that you can get at any autojumble, but maybe not abroad ?
My last Ebay flogging session did achieve some silly prices I must admit (not complaining though !) (until I want something ! ), I had buyers in Germany, Australia, USA but mainly the UK ! We may well be in a world wide recession but one of the side effects is that there's absolutely bugger all for people to invest in (certainly not property or finance) and rare cars, bikes, art , guitars ...you name it.. seem to be where many are sticking their savings.

Re: WTF.....
I agree with Pete - It's no surprise - & certainly not a wtf - that very rare 59 parts will fetch good money, especially nos.
59 cars are all about the little differences, it doesn't come much rarer than these plug caps.
We are talking about 50+ year old parts, when will there be a chance to buy another set?
I didn't know second hand parts were supposed to come with the packaging !!!georgek wrote:And two rusty cylinder brake/clutch caps starting at £50 and that's without the packaging!!!
Again these master cylinder caps are pretty rare & essential to an early mini resto - expect them to fetch a little more than £50.
georgek - I know this seller very well, too well, if you're lucky enough to win them I'll make sure you get some packaging to satisfy your packaging fetish.
I go to a lot of autojumbles, spending a lot of time & money doing so. Nice mini parts are hard to find, especially early parts.
What you see for sale here are parts collected with a keen eye over a long period, which are now being sold as they're no longer needed.
The high prices being achieved these days is just a reflection of the rarity & desirability of these parts.
More of a bin than a wtf if you ask me!!!!!!

Re: WTF.....
BroadspeedGT, I was joking about the packaging it seems that if you sell an item and it's got the original box or wrapping you can at least double or treble the price!!!
Each to their own but to spend £50 on two rusty and dented cylinder caps is laughable the person buying them probably has more money than sense.
These are some previous silly prices, 4 plain hubcaps £301, Screen washer pump £227, Bonnet badge £300, 2 Wiper blades £190!!!

Re: WTF.....
To some extent I do agree with BroadspeedGT.
Rare parts are getting harder to come by & are wanted by more people therefore the price will go up. If someone is finishing a £20,000 restoration & all they need is a NOS screen squirter to make their life complete, then I'm sure that they can merrily justify spending £227 on it.
However, as I have said before personally speaking I could no sooner justify these sort of prices than fly to the moon on fart power. I have become increasingly disillusioned with the Mini scene over the last year or two & this is largely, but not exclusively down to the ridiculous hike in prices for parts.
I am finding myself working on other stuff that as far as I am concerned represents a much more interesting challenge & better value for money.
Having said all that, I'm sitting pretty on a huge fortune in very rare spares & accessories

Re: WTF.....
As nobody is bidding on these at the moment - this seems to be a criticism of the asking price rather than the sold price!!!georgek wrote:Each to their own but to spend £50 on two rusty and dented cylinder caps is laughable the person buying them probably has more money than sense.
These caps should sell for considerably more than the starting price - I haven't seen any of these for sale at autojumbles for some years now, these ones were bought 10+ years ago
when stuff was still about if you were looking hard enough. These parts are getting rarer all the time. When you see the prices achieved on ebay these days you have to take into
consideration that the buyer hasn't had to wear out the shoe leather at autojumbles & with the costs involved, that's if you're lucky enough to find anything. To attend Beaulieu autojumble
costs me in excess of £100 with ticket, fuel & overnight stay let alone time, & parts are getting very hard to find. If I were doing this for profit it wouldn't be worth it, I do it in the hope of
finding parts for my own minis & Lambrettas, obviously if I see something interesting at the right price ,needed or not I will buy in the hope or recouping some of my overheads.
The ebay buyer has none of this aggro or costs, & for example wheel trims can be purchased in sets of 4 rather than one at a time over several years. The parts turn up on you doorstep
no matter where you live in the world.
I always say that you pay too much for some items but the price evens out overall. Some prices achieved like the grille buttons for instance are ridiculous & will probably never be fitted to a car, however most parts are more essential, being needed to complete that restoration. Ive been in the business for over 25 years & have seen the trends, people were moaning about the price the Japanese were paying in the 80's & 90's - the result was that a lot of interesting cars & parts went to Japan at prices that people would fall over today.
With at least half the parts I sell going abroad & seeing the prices on ebay rising year by year it's a case of buy it while you can.

Re: WTF.....
Chris,
I don't think anyone is making a personal criticism of you, this thread is more about the pricers that some BUYERS are prepared to pay.
I agree, finding stuff is almost impossible nowadays & I take my hat off to anyone who is prepared to schlep round Newark or Beaulieu to find stuff to use & sell it has become a totally unrewarding exercise & one I have more or less given up on.
No seller ever has to defend their prices on ebay, its an auction & everything will find it's level. This isn't set by the seller, it's set by the buyers.

Exactly, if you can get that sort of money well done and good luck to you. I'm just saying that you need to have your head examined to pay the prices!!!

Re: WTF.....
I don't see this as personal , I'm just trying to explain these prices from a position of experience, as a trader, jumbler, punter & restorer.
The point I'm making is that these prices are due to market forces ie parts getting hard to find, more people wanting correct parts, cars worth more money & 24hr worldwide auctions.
The prices will only go higher & higher until there's no parts left or cars to restore. I don't think that some of those paying high prices are so crazy,it's easier to buy these parts through
ebay than find them yourself.
You have to ask yourself - when will you see another for sale?

Re: WTF.....
Hi ,
I agree, its the buyers/bidders that set the price (I am one )
its just amazing to see, just HOW high some things go.
regarding a high start price, in the time I have been on Fleabay, I have noticed that people bid very late, when there is a high start price.
If the item is rare enough, the end price will go high anyway, it seems like people want to decide their own start bid, and then get carried away in the end.
I have seen VERY rare things, put on with no reserve, and 99p as start price, and they STILL went "through the roof" at the end.

Re: WTF.....
I used to start all my auctions at 99p with no reserve - a few items slipped through the net miles too cheap!!!!
I now prefer to start with a reasonably high start price - things can be a bit slow to start with but it stops all the goal hangers looking for a bargain at my expense.
I use the free listing days to list as it doesn't cost any more to start with a higher price, that way ebay earns less money & I don't get burnt, if an item doesn't sell I re-list on the next free day.
I set my start price near to what I think somethings worth & let the buyers do the rest.
I think what I do is safest for me & fair to the buyer - Ive sold more than 4000 items on ebay with 100% pos feedback - so I think I must be doing something right.

Why ? And why is it such an irritant to you ?georgek wrote:Exactly, if you can get that sort of money well done and good luck to you. I'm just saying that you need to have your head examined to pay the prices!!!
It absolutely baffles me that people pay £50 to watch 22 injury feigning overpaid over rated cheating foul mouthed chavs running around a Premier League football pitch on a Saturday afternoon gobbing on the ground and swearing at the ref every bloody week but millions do week in week out not to mention being ripped off for food and drink whilst they are there (bitter and twisted ex football fan alert ) , it's their bloody choice not mine, it's a free country.
The reason those obsolete no longer available perfect condition hubcaps went for £300 the other week is because dozens of people all over the world want a new set to finish off their pride and joy. If they were easy to get there wouldn't be a queue of people looking for them and the price wouldn't be so high. It's not rocket science.
To imply the market for rare Mini parts is somehow fixed or the buyers being loony because you wouldn't pay that much for something (you probably don't want anyway) is just banging your head against a wall.
If someone wants to pay £300 for a pair of Paddy grill buttons it's their choice (nutters) ( ) , each to their own.
If you want cheap parts for classic cars it's easy, own one that isn't so rare , sought after or desirable, ie that are easy to find and nobody likes. Why do you think I own a Wolseley Hornet ?
