Dolly Sprint

I just had this urge to build a Dolomite Sprint race car. Does anyone know anyone in the know?
There are infact a couple of nice objects on Ebay.

I had one years ago, a very annoying car.

If you do buy one I have some rather used workshop manuals you can have.

I think I saw that car live at this years CHGP.

Were you there racing ? or as a spectator ?

I was working, so no CHGP for me.

Had a relation who bought one (mimosa yellow) when they first came out, (foolish). He bought it after getting a Ferrari Dino 246(rich and smart) and he thought the Ferrari would be in the garage all the time. Actually it was the Dolomite that lay in the garage getting repaired, the Ferrari just worked.

Triumph, a company totally incapable of designing a decent engine, the list of bad engines being beyond my typing skills, Sufficient to say, the sprint head design ended up on the Rover SD1 2300/2600. an engine less economical than the V8 it was designed to supplant as the petrol saving alternative :lol:

years ago a mate of mine had a tr7 (a convertible i think, but memory is dim)with a dolly sprint engine fitted to it.

it was a bit shabby and down at heel, but for the first week or so he was full of it '16 valve, blah blah'

then it vanished, a few weeks later i went round and found it had blown its head gasket (he wasnt impressed when i asked if it was a 'baby stag :lol: :lol: ')

the big problem was that the head had rotted onto the head studs and was impossible to move, with some brute force he had managed to get the head about 1/4" off the block and was cutting through the head studs using a hacksaw blade wrapped around a cloth..... - this is with the engine in situ......


i never saw the piece of junk run again, i suspect he weighed it in, but wont even talk about it now, 15 years on..... :lol: :lol: :lol:

whenever anyone ever mentions dolly sprints all i can think of is this lad covered in black engine oil, grease and rusty water, furiously hacking away at the studs on this utter shite tr7!!! :lol: :lol: :lol:


still, he got his own back and sold me a meastro efi that did exactly the same.... :lol: :lol:

There was the discussion about why the TR7 never had the sprint engine from the factory, till someone did the conversion. Then the reason was out! it was no faster than the std 2lt 8 valve and probably took longer to blow up, like 2 weeks instead of 1.

I got the stud out of the one I did by drilling down through the top of the std. We had reached the end of the road, it was broken off flush and it was 3 days to get the other 9 out. Still have the stud somewhere as it was a amazing piece of hand held drilling.
