GRX 5D
by worksminis » 14 Apr 2017, 23:12
Monte Carlo Jan 66. Hopkirk/Liddon. Group 1. Disqualified.
Flowers Feb 66. Fall/Liddon. Group 1. Disqualified.
Tulip Apr 66. Makinen/Easter. Group 1. 9th O/A, 1st in Class.
Same car? (For tarmac Tulip after very rough Flowers) but ID swap cannot be totally ruled out. (Or was Flowers an ID swap and this was Monte 5D?).
RAC Nov 66. Makinen/Easter. Group 2. New car. Retired when leading by large margin. Arguably one of the greatest Mini performances, despite no result.
The reason for and place of retirement are quoted in various sources. Contrary to what is often written, retirement was failure of the idler gear bearing in Pundershaw Forest (Kielder). (This was the original “short peg” idler gear and it was quickly replaced in production by the “long peg” idler gear, initially by means of a new circlip allowing the gear peg to pass through it). A photo of Cliff Humphries holding the gear with the dismantled engine on a bench and GRX5D behind is wrongly captioned in one book as “assembling the engine”.
Circuit of Ireland Apr 67. Hopkirk/Harryman. Group 2. 1st. New car?
Tulip Apr 67. Benzimra/Harryman. Group 2? Retd.
Scottish Jun 67. Fall/Wood. Group 2? Retd.
Gulf London Jul 67. Fall/Wood. Group 2? Retd Significant body damage.
Marathon de la Route Aug 67. Fall/Vernaeve/Hedges. Group 6. 999cc. 2nd O/A. New car.
Tour de Corse Nov 67. Hopkirk/Crellin. Group6. Retd (Officially, fan belt. Sabotage widely believed).
Rallycross Lydden Hill weekend after cancelled RAC, Dec 67. Hopkirk.
Shell 4000 (Canada) Apr 68. Hopkirk/Kerry. Disqualified. New car.
Sold to Pressed Steel Apprentices. (but which car?).

The then GRX5D (Corsica car) with Hopkirk (and wife) at the Lydden Hill rallycross that was the weekend after the cancelled 67 RAC Rally.
This event was scheduled long before the "Foot and Mouth" cancellation and is sometimes confused with the event that we would now call a "Rallysprint" that took place over the scheduled first special stage of the RAC for TV. It was intended to attract International RAC competitors who would have finished the RAC on the Wednesday and then moved to Lydden, convenient for Dover and return home. (They'd already gone home to count their losses from the devaluation of the £ while they were in the UK with UK currency)

Hi Steve. Thanks for posting.
Do you have Mike Wood's clearance to post that photo? (we were aware of it - and the similar one of his of DJB93B in 66) - but please see the general note on copyright.

Apologies, I didn't realise it's origin. Feel free to delete.
I've got hundreds of photo's of works cars, but really not sure which are protected.

These photos were taken by me while attending the first ever 'National Mini Owners Club Meeting' in a field at Twycross Zoo, Warwickshire on 6th June 1982.

Re: GRX 5D
Who owns GRX 5D now?
I last saw it years ago when it was part of Tom Turkingtons fantastic collection, along with 24PK.

Some pics from the Bonhams Auction site for its sale in 2007 (?)
There was loads of them (over 20 I think) but rather than stick them all up I thought the more detailed shots would be of more interest instead of the external shots of the car.
