Hi Iazza, the ID plate is for a 11th or 12th month 1962 Morris 850. I think you have misread / typed the number, it should be:

Type YMA2S1
Car No. 19580
Engine No. 8AM/U/H 386956
Colour 1/Shadow Blue/3 (is a nice light blue a bit like speedwell blue)

There may be another number in the 'Car No' Box, something like 1328XX which is the UK CKD number.

The engine in your car is incorrect, looks like a later 998 from a 70's Leyland clubman or something.

This will have a remote or rod change gearbox and not the 'pudding stirrer' long type lever from the front of the floor.

I'd suggest you sign up for "AUSMINI" http://www.ausmini.com/forums/index.php

Like here on Marks fine website, you will get good info. and there is an Aussie 850 register.

Welcome!

Were these numbers ever stamped on the shell anywhere on Australian cars? I've found some strange numbers stamped on the floor crossmember under the front seats on my '66 South African "S" (also CKD). Wondering if it could be that.

In Aus, these numbers were stamped on the bulkhead, often behind the Chassis / car plate and also on the floor under the passenger seat on early cars, certainly 850's and possible really early cooper 997's.

The number is the same as a UK chassis number, I beleive these may be traceable via Heritage, where the entry will say something like CKD export etc.

Simon 776VDE on this forum would probably know!

If I were you, I would forward the numbers to heritage and see what they know.

Does the number fit the range of chassis numbers for an S of that period? See Parnell etc.

Cheers! 8-)

That's what I would also expect. Problem is the numbers/letters are mostly undecipherable. The same stamp is under both front seats but neither is clear enough to make out and the car lost its chassis plate in previous restorations. It seems to be a 9 digit mix of numbers and letters, so I doubt it is a UK chassis number. In SA I've seen a unique numbering system on Cooper S's as well (MA2S4CS.123 for example).

Anyway, I'm hijacking Lazza's thread here...apologies.
