An interesting fact revealed this week online. This car was in fact a works British Leyland Mk3 s with the non external hinged doors modified to take sliding windows to save weight. Also, while looking for images of the car I noticed some from another Australian rally in 1969 but the reg was same numbers but in different order. More info in "Works Mini in Detail" - 2nd reprint now available.

Southern Cross 1970. As mentioned by Cliff Mk3 internal hinge with sliding windows.

The sliding windows were also an homologation issue. The mk3 style shell with the vertically operating windows had not been homologated by the time this car was being built for BL Australia. The style of windows is specifically mentioned in the homolagation papers so the mk3 had to conform with the mk1/mk2 spec to run in group 2. This car ran without any boot badge and a mk 2 badge on the bonnet.

I thought this was the line up for 1970 Southern Cross Rally which also included Andrew Cowan and possibly Brian Culcheth but only 2 cars in image but I was wrong it was the 1971 Heatway Rally in New Zealand. BLA 532 was an F registered Works car and BLA 523 was the Mk3.

YMO881 was crashed and reshelled by Evan Green into this Australian Clubman GT shell. Evan sold it to a chap (maybe northern NSW or Queensland?) and it was never seen again. I believe this is the only missing works Mini?
