hi doc
well a guy by the name of brian foley made 4 or 5 broad speed minis in sydney australia one was raced at bathurst and clocked 127.8 mph do not know what happened to them one the racer is still around but the others who knows also bill buckle made a lot of the monarco minis in sydney also and one is were locally in taree the lady owner has restored it and it was bought new by her father
was featured in mini magazine recently about 6 months ago

Another major task is to form the roof section. The correct flow or alignment of the rooflines is the important factor for a good result. I have seen fast back conversions were the roof modification has just begun on the B-pillar backwards. The front part seems to be untouched. But that doesn’t look right, because the roofline is not flowing. So it is important to modify the roof from front to end.

Without an original car at hand, it’s more difficult to find the correct roofline but not impossible . I created a 1 to 1 print of an original Broadspeed at the computer. That gave me the correct flow of the centerline. Because the shape from left to right shouldn’t be different to a regular Mini roof, I combined both shapes. I took left to right templates of the Mini roof about every 15 cm and one template of the new centerline. Sticking these templates together gave me the shape of the new roof left and right of the centerline. Eventually I cut the missing templates to build the new 3 dimensional buck.

That's amazing. I'm really enjoying watching this develop.
Of course I know what a dipstick is, you get called something often enough you look it up!

hi doc
that is simular to how i am doing the unipower gt i use a full straight photo of the area and scale it to full sizethen make sections fullsize from pine timber and fix them in position on a rail that runs from wheel centre to wheel centre then i will glue thin slats over the frame and sand to smooth finish and then make the glass moulds
that foley guy mabe his broadspeed cars all steel

The Brian Foley GT's were certainly GRP, just like the UK built cars.

According my research there might be 3 full metal Broadspeed derivates in Down Under. 2 are from the same builder and 1 from another. All of them are just more or less close to the Broadspeed shape but differ in many details like boot lid, roof shape, door and window lines, and so on. One of these derivates is or was for sale this year.

So here's couple of Oz Broadspeeds I shot earlier.

As Mark noted, both a fibreglass/metal composites. AIUI, while Laurie Stewart was behind the project, the shells (or maybe just the roof sections) were made by Bill Buckle who was a fibreglass boat builder.

Somewhere I have shots of a white one ..but its well buried for now.

Thanks for all the information about the Aussi cars. That rounded up my picture.

In the meantime the preparation of the bodyshell went on. In a later state the bodyshell should be sandblasted. To save some money and the risk of deforming large panel areas due to sandblasting, I removed as much paint as possible in advance. I found out on an earlier MK1 bodyshell, that the old paint can easily be removed with a heat gun and a scraper. But this was a MK2 bodyshell which was repainted in the 80th. So I tried this method again and was happily surprised, it worked. It took me about 1 hour to remove all paintlayers in one go of the whole roof. And what I realy like is, there are no mechanical damages to the metal surface. You can even see old pencil notes on the bare metal from 50 years ago. No grinding marks or scratches.

I was curious about the side panels, because they had metal patches in the lover section and plenty of filler over it. But even there it was no problem to remove the paint, with filler und primer in one go. Its only a problem when the paint is too thin or the panel is convex like the inside of the roof. Then you can’t catch the paint properly with the scraper. I can highly recommend that method. Just try it before you start grinding or blasting or whatever. Another big advantage is, its quiet and dust free. 8-) So the garage stays clean.

Exact same method I used on my mk2 and agree was cleanest way to remove the layers of paint. Coming along well though now, very skilful metalwork, can’t wait to see the roof shaped

As the Broadspeed has no boot lid and the excess is only possible via a foldable backseat, thus I had to build it. The old backrest panel and the rear parcel shelf hat to get out. I build a metal frame for the new foldable backrest. The area over the wheel arches needed new fillers. So I needed wooden mould to hammer the new filler panel. The frame got some stiffener to sit properly in the bodyshell.

Unfortunately the mounting point for the fuel tank strap was now somewhere in the air. So I build a mounting bracket and welded it to the frame. This is how it finally looks like.
