The BMW Mini was a bit of a damp squib, finishing 15 overall after the front wheel fell off in the race 1. The front wheel came off in Friday 2nd practice when I was there (see my photos earlier in this thread)............was this the same side again and any idea why?

I make no apologies for having a bit of a "thing" about this BMW and their so-called might. Simply diving into the Minispares ST department without taking the time, effort and research (taken by most of the owners/drivers/racers who regularly contribute to this forum) to build an authentic FIA Appendix K racecar demonstrates opportunism and far too much time on their hands when they should be at work developing new cars for the road.

The fact that Swifty was many seconds clear of the other mini opposition showed that cars like these take years of development (and no little investement) to get to the top and (nearly) topple the Cortinas and BMWs. Andy's efforts to complete both races and finish respectably in midfield exemplify the effort and dedication of a true enthusiast and fully justified his Goodwood outing. I'm sure the memories will remain with him forever.

Desmond Smail is a historic racing legend. Only 52 but looks.... umm, a little older, he deals in what every celebrity wants.....Aston Martins and so when he strolls into a room, women kick off their shoes and men get out their chequebooks. Privately he is a very kind and generous man but he'd kill me for letting that one out of the bag.

How idiotic of BMW to stick their car full of modern stripes and sponsor/partner stickers.. So completely out of place in an event like the Goodwood Revival.

Makes it even sweeter to learn that their car failed to shine

I agree and Andy's the exception not the rule in that respect which make his achievements even more notable

. Most Revival Minis have historically been 'Goodwood specials' and I suspect wouldn't stand up to the scrutiny experienced outside of the Masters (five bearing cranks ?). I don't see BMW's effort that much different to the others and Swifty's carrying advertising now on his car. Goodwood's all about the theatre of the event so fair enough but even a works Mini wouldn't get near a well prepared Lotus Cortina at Goodwood in period.

Every time Nick Swift got past the Galaxie there was a massive cheer from the crowd around us, even by the end of the race he hadn't dropped that far behind the big V8, once its on the TV have a look at him as he goes over the line on the last lap, I thought he had a set of drums in the car the way his arms were going!, perhaps he should do it before the race next year as some sort of rain dance

, no Minis next year on rotation, so maybe the DART will be out again (or I'll share the Sprint with him if he pays to prep it

)

Nick Swift had a brilliant save at Madgwick (1st corner)on the start with a serious rub on his o/s rear 1/4 from the Galaxy,could have been a disaster but he kept his foot in and pulled through much to the delight of all on the corner.
Andy reckons he was 20 bhp down on the opposition

It was a pleasure to watch Andy drifting his car round Lavant in the damp conditions on Sunday. Good result for a non 'Goodwood' car.

The fibreglass bumpers on the Galaxie probably save it carrying the equivalent weight of a mini shell, especialy when half of it got knocked off

!

Agreed, I don't see BMW's effort that much different to the others either, is it a case of "damned if they do, damned if they don't"......at least it puts another race Mini on the Goodwood grid for us the paying spectators to see. The team colours/stripes are as seen on their MINI Challenge race car but must admit I never knew that sponsors/partner stickers were 'frowned' on at Goodwood until it was mentioned here.

Does it include 'in period' stickers like 'Castrol' 'Shell' and 'Dunlop'?

id guess that after the wheel fell of the first time (caused by the hubnut comming undone), all they have done is stuck a new disc on it and used a new nut, without considering that the hub, bearing or c.v joint will have been at fault originally and will have been stressed even more after the first problem - the heat generated by the disc moving around like that is amazing - when the same thing happened on my car it 'blued' the entire bearing - on mine it took a sledge hammer to release the c.v joint from the remains of the bearing!

the sensible thing to do in a situation like this is just to replace the whole corner and measure/asses what can be saved from the old one once your back at home.

they should have been running a pair of youles racing 'nut savers' as well - that would have helped!

Thanks Guru, our "nut savers" would have prevented this.

Went to Nick Swift's today to collect Ron's engine.

His race engine from the weekend had just been removed from his car and "the spare was being installed for Spa as the Goodwood weekend had killed the engine". Looked pretty quick to me as it crossed the finish line.
