Fuel Sender gauge setup on 997

Post by Charlynsane »

Hello Guys

I'm owning a unrestored 997 from Nov 63,
Image

At a point of her life the car received a 7,5l tank, I refited a 5,5 gallon with the sender that looks to be a late one, even the car doesn't have voltage stabilizer at the back of the speedo

The fuel gauge seems to work but is bouncing a little bit on the road but it works

I assume That I would fit a ARA959 sender instead of the one fitted ?

Shoud I put a ring terminal ?

Or a screw on blade? to Connect directly the 2 wires?

For originality they connected directly - bolting the loop on to the sender.

For lack off messing around - Id retain your spade clip that was added to the loom (presumably) and bolt in the spade tab to make the connection.

These cars always had a bouncy gauge btw :-)

Now I realise of course you have a new tank so cannot fit the old type sender to it? Apologies as I jumped in too quickly there. In my mind I was thinking you had sourced an old tank too.

Now I think we need some electrical experts, but if I recall it is possible to hide a stabiliser earthed to the car and connected to the tank??

Can anyone confirm if they have used this before - or maybe have a better plan of action??

By the way my late 64 SDL actually has two tank harnesses, one for each type of tank. It has always been like this so I assume it was a crossover model??

Later tank sender means you need a later fuel gauge and also the voltage stabiliser that needs to be fitted behind the speedo .
I did this on my 63 Mini , the original supply to the gauge now goes to voltage stabiliser then a new jumper wire from stabiliser back to the now empty terminal on the gauge , job done .
Make sure you put wires correct way round on the voltage stabiliser it should be marked .

Yes I know it’s not original

My wife says I don’t listen to her or something like that !

Hello Andy

Thank you,

My tank come from a 66 mk1, with the ring for the fuel sender

By the way there is two different fuel sender for car without voltage stabilizer

So if I'm correct I can fit a ARA959? without any problem?
