Mk3's....

Post by tedmcedd »

Well.... I have just signed a lease for a new unit to get the minis into, my dad's mk2 cooper, and my '71 mk3 1000...

Im wanting to get the mk3 back to super original condition, with 70's mods...

teal blue out the factory im guessing, as blue was the original colour, teal is the 70's shade of blue is it not?

few things i'd like to confirm, plus anything that you can add that would be a help!

the shell should be the mk2/mk3 cross, with the twinbolt subby, internal hinges, but with the mk2 floorpan. extra drip rail, solid front parcel shelf, the hole in the rear seat...

what loom type do mk3's have? do they have that funny extra box that mk1s an 2s have and a dynamo?

Interior wise, the big fat rocker switches with the manual washer pump for the switch panel, but what choke/heater combo? i know the heater should have that chrome suround, the handbrake should be twin cable and white tipped, the sterring column the type with the single stalk and the ignition on the top...

what seatbelts would have been fitted? and woul the shell have the ash trays in the rear bins??

hope you all have your anoraks on!!

Ed

PS, pictures are nice too!

Here are some pictures of a 71 998,mk 3
Engine bay

Seat belt probably an option on this car. Most would probably have had static belts.

The shell sounds right. I’ve never looked at the parcel shelf. And the whole thing is buried under a load of boxes, so can sort of see it, but not get to it.
Mine has an alternator. It’s also got the mk1/2 “T” bar boot handle. It had a lovely Autoplus dash with toggle switches and ignition switch so I’ve assumed it also had the mk2 switch panel, the cowl on the column is also mk2 without any steering lock etc. It’s also got an aftermarket electric washer pump.
Choke and heater are the rubbery ones with early inserts.
Static belts Kangol I think but will check. Mk 2 interior and white rear view mirror too.
I don’t think there are any ash trays in the back.
It was registered 1st of Jan 71 I’ve no idea on build date.
It’s also got Cibie headlights. The whole car was properly “improved” during its life. Corbeau gt4 seats, plastic dash, vinyl roof, Paddy Hopkirk wheels, Nikki carb etc.

I’ll try to have a look in the week and post some pictures but quite a bit of it is in boxes.
I was beginning to worry this internal hinge thing was just me.

Should have mk2 type floorpan with round tunnel,
Mine doesn't have solid parcel shelf, has hole in rear
Bulkhead although my other mk3 has solid rear bulkhead,
It may have had a dynamo with control box but you can get
A loom with alternator wires

My scrapped 71 MK3 had a hole in the rear bulkhead and the front parcel shelf was not solid.
Can't remember seeing rear ashtrays and the seat belts were inertia, but had been fixed to the rear companion bins (very badly by a cowboy) similar to some later models.
Dynamo fitted with the control box.
Plenty of MK3 bits and bobs still in the shed.
