Re: Barn find MK 2 Rally car
Not much done the last 2 months, but the gearbox is now ready. All the parts from the old box is reused in the "new" housing.
So it is genuine ST sc/cr 4 synchro, with Salisbury LSD, and 4.26 diff ratio. Also the homemade "splash plate" went back in.

Re: Barn find MK 2 Rally car
Sunday, I started the engine build, I did fear, that the valves could hit the pistons, so I fitted the cylinderhead, without the gasket, and sure enough the exhaust valve hit the piston just before TDC.

Re: Barn find MK 2 Rally car
It is the Minispares C-AEG311 Rally evolution, duration 306 in and 300 out timing 53/73 in and 74/46. This cam has more exhaust lift.
but I do have another, that came with the car, and it should be of Jim Whitehouse design, and is also duration 306 in and 300 out, but 48/78 in and 75/45 out.

These useable std size forged pistons, came with the car, the Cut outs for the Valves needs to be about 1 mm deeper. Anybody knows of the piston brand HG?

Re: Barn find MK 2 Rally car
After 3 weeks, working in Switzerland, it is nice to be back home in the garage. I have had a closer look, at the 8 port cam installation. With the AEG 625 "S" rods, a lot of the head needs to be removed from the bolt, to clear the cam.

Re: Barn find MK 2 Rally car
Fortunately, it is a set of AEG 177 conrods, I have chosen to work on for this engine. Look have much lower, the bolt sits in the conrod. Is it always like this?

Re: Barn find MK 2 Rally car
Yes all AEG 177 rods are like that , the original BMC rod bolts were shorter
I believe BMC changed the rod design because some rods failed

Re: Barn find MK 2 Rally car
After som turning and milling, the conrods is now ready.
For the 177 rods the new ARP bolts have been shortened by 3mm.
Before they where about 680g, and now 600g

Re: Barn find MK 2 Rally car
After trial fitting, with the chosen cam, I made the pockets 0,70mm deeper
