Big Changes In Hillclimbing Regs in 2020

I have just discovered that there are huge changes in Hillclimbing regulations proposed for 2020.

These include the elimination of the requirement to use original engine blocks, which could open the Modified Production classes up to engine swap cars like Hyabusa powered Minis, for example.

Also, the tyre & suspension regs are under review with major changes proposed.

These new regs are designed to make Hillclimbing more accessible, but are just as likely to piss existing competitors off massively.

I've got a 69 Mini with a 1046, Cooper Head and a four on the floor.

From what i can see the biggest change is combining
Class C(i) Modified Series Production Cars up to & including 1400cc
(harewoods 3A Modified Production Cars excluding Kit, Replica and Space-framed Cars up to & including 1400cc
Marks old car etc running on slicks or mini miglia if you like)
&
Class D Modified Specialist Production Cars
(harewoods Class 3F Modified Specialist Cars up to & including 1700cc)

This puts mini's in the same class as caterham kit cars with motor bike engines in etc BUT you cant fit a Hyabusa engine in a mini
13. Regulations for Modified Series
Description
13.1. Modified - Cars.
Must have been originally available through
the normal commercial channels of the
manufacturer in quantities of not less than
1,000 vehicles within 12 consecutive
months.
13.1.1. Vehicles produced in lesser
quantities may be admitted subject to the
manufacturer obtaining approval from
Motorsport UK.
13.2. Modified Cars.
Must have been originally available quantities of not less than
20 chassis within 12 consecutive months.

13.6.2The engine must be of a make and type
produced in at least 1,000 identical units
and fitted to a vehicle originally available
through the normal commercial channels of
a land vehicle manufacturer.
This means that if mini's enter the current mod prod class next year they can not fit Hyabusa engines into them etc BUT they have to compete against caterham etc with them in......

where is the logic in that............
That is going to f**k over alot of current competitors as those who have gone all out for that class will not be able to swap them to the road going with out some major changes

I may have linked to the wrong set of proposed amendments, there is definitely a suggestion that standard blocks & suspension type are no longer required in Mod Prod.

It is discussed at some length in the Uphill Gardners, urm I mean racers, link in my previous post.

13.6. Engine
123.6.1. Modification to all components is
permitted.
After speaking the MSA technical department this morning the proposed changes are not finalised and they are listening to peoples feedback.
But i did find out that engine swaps to Hyabusa would not be permitted.

They changed the wording to allow abit more modification not replacement.
MSA Deification of Modification: (Section B p58 bluebook)
Modification. Any change in the design, material, shape,
dimensions and/or surface finish of a component,
except for basic manufacturing processes, normal wear
and published service or repair procedures.
"if we were allowing engine swaps in that class the regulations would state Free"
So look something like that.
123.6.1. Free .
They are just changed it to allow further modification for the block....
No idea what you could do to it of the top of my head at the moment. Maybe an alloy block?

I maybe looking at this and over simplifying it but,....

surely if you want to run to a specific set of rules, that other competitors are already running to, and wanting to stick to. The answer Mark must be set up a Mk1 mini conversions class, that follows these specific rules and invite others already running to them to join your class :?:

tbh any concerns or questions people have they should just phone up the MSA and ask for technical regs ask questions and give feedback thats what they want from people.
writing pages and pages on forums & then not calling them will not give them feedback.

Stuart has a good point in that most of the classes we enter or historic championships have their own regs anyway! Its exactly what happened when I started the MCR Speed series in the early 90s, I think there were three specific classes in the end (I started with two) and now you'd only really need one?

I'm a bit daunted by all these regs even before they started messing with them

I have dug out the Biota and thought I might try hillclimbing rather that try to put a modern cage in it to go circuit racing

What does anyone see as events / championships that it might be eligible for? Its registered 1972 as a Biota so not even sure if that is covered by "mini-based" special or whatever

I wouldn't want to do a whole championship - more of Duffers Day Out thing. I've not looked at even Mark's class at Harewood yet

I realize it will get put in with bigger and better stuff in either circuit or hillclimbing circles.

Because it’s post Period E and not classed as a production car (>1000 per annum) or a specialist production car (more than 20pa) I think you need a roll cage for speed events even if it’s roadgoing but I could be wrong, might be worth asking the MSA or HSA.

I’ve had a go in the BOC Classic Championship this year, it’s on handicap and pre 77 I think.

I’m another one who wants a “Maximum Mini Class” for Hillclimb, or sprinting.
I’d dearly love to go circuit racing but the costs are astronomical.

I think it would be great to have a mini specials class,

Just imagine for a second the likes of....

Biota’s,
Unipower gt’s,
Stylus,
Ogal’s,
Cox,
Mini Marcos,
Davrian,
Deep Sanderson,
Landar,
Terrapin’s ect.

It would be great to see them all compete against each other.

One can dream spose. :roll:

Looks like he found out exactly what I found out with mine, lift off even just a little bit too much with lock on and it swaps ends faster than you can type it.
