Different engine mounts on the 1100 and they didn't require the extra supprt of the remote to steady the engine.

Yes I agree, those 1100/1300 engine mounts (LHS) work very well.

The advantage compared to the Mini,s STD mounts, is that its located above the crank/tourqe center, of the engine.
This makes the engine sit much more steady, in the frame.

If it was for extra refinement on the BMC 1100 range why not improve the Mini at the same time and reduce the production costs with common parts?

A Mini subframe, wont take the 1100/1300 LHS engine mounts, as there is no room for it/them :(

My car has a simelar engine mount design, and it works very well.
And for those who wonder " how come his car has room for it ? "
Well JanSpeed relocated the engine, it was moved 2" foreward, and is tilted 5 degrees.
They also made it adjustable, in seperat parts, so easier to fit, very clever design.

I'll answer my own question from page 2...

The mini extension WILL fit an 1100 - the rear bracket for the extension housing that is fitted to the body on the 1100 needs an additional hole drilled lower down to accommodate the mini extension housing.

Other than that, it's a direct replacement swap.

Very much enjoying having the 1100 with 4-sync box & 3.65 diff (it's a 1275 so the 3.65 is pretty good).

Big thanks to Madmatt (& Archie!!) for the help/facilities/beers/bourbons for the swap.

cheers,

Jacob

JC, I disagree with you on the fitment of an 1100 engine mount, I refer to the one behind the timing chain that extends to the front and rear.

Because my son was an animal when driving his Mini (rod box, no rocking support at all) and he would knock engine mounts out in a matter of weeks I fitted the 1100 mounting plate and fabricated mounts on the back and front of the subframe, this worked brilliantly, the engine never moved, it beats all these fancy head steady mounts to the thermostat and such like.

I think it ought to have been a standard fitment on Mini's, no more engine mounting problems at all.

Does make you wonder why they did not go back and improve the engine rock, a common criticism of the Mini, when they had already engineered a simple and efficient solution on the 1100 range with the bonus of added refinement and more common parts/economies of scale for production.

Then again.....in an interview last year for Miniworld an ex-graduate management trainee employed at BL from 1969-80, said she discovered although the Mini 850 was being sold cheaper than the 1000cc for 2 or 3 years it had cost more to manufacture its engine because the volume point meant having them specifically engineered. Customers who bought the cars expected smaller to be cheaper but it wasn't the case............

Hi Pete,

Well its been many years, since I saw a 1100/1300 engine in a Mini, with its timing chain/front plate, still fitted.
And yes it was these mounts I referred to (Left Hand Side mounts)
I remember it as a VERY tight, and leaving no room for the rear mount ?
seem to remember, I had to bend the plate a little, to get the engine in ? not shure (were back in 1980/81 ) and my memory is not that good ;)

But if you also built one, then its great, becourse this really is the way, to keep the engine "in place" 8-)

Agree, BMC should have dublicated this to the Mini range.
My car runs soo smooth, with these mounts, and NO engine steady bar, above the transfer gear housing ;)
