..Great pic..Rhodes,Spice,Neal et al.. the late 60,s with the fastest S types built battling against the Mk 1 Escorts..the racing was incredible..especially the Crystal Palace events..my Dad had an F and G plate white Mk 1 Escorts..we were still outpaced by late MK2 and 3 S types on fast roads....memories !!!...foxy52

I was working in Australia then, for getting on to 3 years between '67 and late 69 and frommy memory, the Bee Gees hadn't made any impact on the music scene in Oz. The Easy Beats, yes, Brian Foley the mini racer, yes but the Bee Gees...., nope!

Twin Cams were all Ermine white apart from Australian built CKD kits. They looked almost identical to a regular Escort apart from front quarter bumpers (Anglia van rears!) and very slight front arch flares. GT's (apart from very early ones) had stainless trim around the side windows and around the rear panel plus around the arches, but the TC had none - really basic trim as well. Most TC's had the useless oblong GT headlamps with the last year getting the better circular Lucas sealed beams.

The 1300GT wasn't as fast as an S on acceleration - about the same as a 1275GT - but were about the same flat out. That 1300 Crossflow was a revvy little bugger, very short stroke and big valves. The handling was pretty average though - you needed the proper one really.

You're right, my S is quicker than my Escort GT, both standard spec cars.
To be fair though, the Escort does drive well.
