This Months Mini World (Downton Article)

Post by mk1 »

I received my complimentary copy of Miniworld this morning, this was "payment" for helping with a Downton article that is published this month.

The first thing I noticed was the toilet papery nature of Miniworld nowadays.

I then moved onto the Downton article. Despite me having gone through the text to try & make sure it was right I am amused to see that a lot of the stuff I deleted was subsequently put back in

The most amusing one I have spotted so far is the fact that my old green Downtonised 1071 has made it into the "Downton Owned Minis" list (all be it complete with a typo TKU 133 actually reads KTU 133) despite me having personally crossed it off the list!

MikeTaylor went to great lengths to try & get this article right, I'm a little disappointed to see that so many boobs have been sub edited back in.

I am sure that regular visitors to the site will recognise most of the images that accompany the text :?

Still, all in all a worthwhile & interesting article.

random fact, the beatrice shilling mentioned was a engine genius, one of the things she developed was the improvements to the carbs on spitfires to stop them cutting out in high g turns - the small valve thing she designed was called 'mrs shillings orifice', no doubt much to the amusment of all involved......
please note, these are my own, individual sales, nothing whatsoever to do with my employer, minispares

As a less knowledgeable Mini person I didn't notice any mistakes - mainly because I wouldn't have known them to be wrong - and thought the article was fantastic, a credit to all involved. :D

But I have to agree, this is very very annoying when you spend so long making sure it's as accurate as possible for it to be put in print wrong, it has happened to me a few times. :(

I too thought it a good article and was unaware of any mistakes. However, that's journalists for you. Most know far less about the subject matter than you and I. I've also got equally frustrated with articles I've helped magazines with relating to the Works rallycars and no matter what I do, the final article often falls short of expectations.

I think actually we should count our blessings that MiniWorld give coverage to these interesting historic subjects. I for my part are not the least bit interested in the biggest speakers you can cram into a Mini or what type of motorbike engine someone’s fitted into the boot. I like the old stuff, much as I suspect most of us here do.

At least the 'Daily Sport' used to have the decency to print the 'boob count' on the front cover, that way you knew what you were buying

I'm afraid too many journalists trust previous articles/ websites / previously published books and as such tend to perpetuate the odd myth, but in their defence, sometimes it's hard to know which source to 'trust' and they more often than not go with the commonly held belief. I suspect it's because thay know that if they don't, next months letters page will be full of people who've read the same myths elsewhere will write in to tell them they are wrong...... they can't win

Tis true and I'll admit I make litttle mistakes all the time because even when I check the facts with the people who were there at the time they often get it wrong themselves ! Fair enough, most of can't remember what we were doing this time last week let alone fifty years ago ! We should be grateful you're right, though they do print some rubbish now and again like the article on Eddie Whitham's colour race and rally slides which was was just a pile of generic journo waffle , zero research went into that.

You can also buy digital copies of it online through Zinio. Its relatively inexpensive but unless you have an ipad its a lot less practical to read on the toilet.

The Dutch version is here:
