Castle Combe Autumn Classic - October 5th

Post by Pete »

This is a cracking event, been a few times and hopefully will this year. Two HRDC races amongst all the usual and often pretty special 50s/60s stuff, good trade stalls, loads of nice cars and knowledgable punters at a circuit that’s managed to keep a great ‘club racing’ atmosphere. http://autumnclassic.co.uk/

It was cold and dull in the morning, but plenty to see so no problem.

Also good to see a full grid in the touring car race, and maybe the HSCC could learn from the HRDC All Stars race. It might have what some might call and odd mix of cars, but at least the grid is full.

There was a good variety of cars brought in by the clubs and punters so you could always have a wander around if the racing got a bit dull.

Missed qualifying due to family stuff but caught races in afternoon, some great mixed races.
Not being ghoulish, but any idea what the “medical emergency” was ?

Seems that one of our racing chums had a heart attack and died "on the job" during the Allstars race. The car speared off the track into the infield mercifully

Shades of Chris Inch (Paul's dad) who died here similarly at the wheel of his 1275GT

I noticed some sadness expressed elsewhere but apart from one obvious exception I can't think of a better way to go!

I had a frustrating day trying to get rid of a spongy brake pedal but had a fair enough time . Its a circuit that is looked down on by some but has a lovely atmosphere and always gets a good crowd

Thanks for letting me know Tim, how very sad, but as you say, when you've got to go, theres only one situation thats better.

I thought the racing and event was excellent.

Somewhat surprised that the Studebaker wasn’t black flagged earlier as the oil slick it laid on the track looked pretty slippery, particularly over Avon Rise, into Quarry.
It must have done 2 or 3 laps in the race spraying out oil, having also dumped it out in qualifying.

Adds to the spectator entertainment though I suppose......

Wasn't sure if he was ignoring black flag for a bit even . I wasn't watching
