Pretty much the only times we have had a problem when the customer has attempted to unscrew the union from the displacer to see how we do it, and then complained that it leaked.Daz1968 wrote:I know someone who used minimail and new hose failed after a short time and he couldn't get any backup at all, ended up fitting a good used one. There is no rocket science to it as discussed here just common sense and application and hoping the unit is sound enough to take a new connection
The other times I have been slagged off has been when people want for me to supply the parts and info so they can do their own. Yes , I charge £90 to do a unit but that's part of earning my crust
I am glad its opening up to all the amateurs to have a go; they're a fascinating piece of kit . Days of fun on forums to be had....

Tim's comments above are why I haven't contributed to this topic up until now. I have only ever had 2 displacers that needed repairing. I sent these to Tim who repaired them & returned them to me quickly & efficiently. They were back on the car, a 1300 within a week.
OK, I wasn't bothered about the pattern on the hose or if I am being honest the in's & out's of their internal construction, all I wanted was 2 displacers to stop my 1300 dragging it's arse along the ground.
Tim gave me exactly what I was looking for in good time at a very good price, what more could I ask.
I do find this thread interesting, but have always believed in keeping things as simple as I can. Post buggered displacers off & receive working ones a few days later. Jobs a good un.

I'm a major contributor to the hydrofiasco system part of the forum Tim and you've never heard me slag any of the refurbishers or re-hosers off. As said many times, the man-with-the-van in my little village rehosed mine in an hour or so. I didn't give a toss about the hose pattern or yellow stripe chequering or band colour either Just wanted a unit that didn't leak and was capable of holding fluid - and with what he had on his van! I'm sure that like Mark says, no one is REALLY interested in the guts of the displacers now and the values of the so-called internal valve system (yep, pull the other one, it's got bells on it!!!). But good on anyone that wants to try to fix their own hose - or want to paint their own car. And more power to the likes of Tim and other pro's, like the paint pros who offer a service. And long may they reign. But you'll be a brave man who does a hydro home-fix nowadays

99% of folk on here are here for all the right reasons and thankyou for all your input Peter. I just don't have that much time to follow it all
I can be as anal as anyone and to prove I am enclosing a pic of what was part of the process, in that I even got quite excited when the enclosed turned up. I got given via a friend a development helper spring from Dr Moulton himself .
Its when they were trying to establish how much more beefy the spring needed to be to counter the extra weight on the front as the car got heavier.
The one with the shortest spring is the early version and the one with the longest is what they ended up with after '67 or when it came in. In the middle is an in-betweeny one

I hear good reports from friends who have used them...
Parts blasted, re hosed, tested and painted for the same price as Tim I believe...so there’s always a market price for a service...
