MK2 850 AUTO....GARAGE FIND

Post by Nick W »

A chance conversation my son had whilst out drinking in London, leD to me purchasing this mini more or less blind....the photos I had just showed it squashed in to a tiny metal 1930s garage near London. so I decided to break my mini purchasing ban, and set off in my landrover and trailer for the 350 miles round trip.
after pulling the mini out of its long term resting place (last taxed 83)..I was shocked at the rust free car that I had pulled out. the front tyres where hanging off, so it was a real job getting it out, and when I tried to bounce it over, I felt my calf muscle tear, and could hardly walk  , it was pissing it down with rain and I was in a bit of a tangle . eventually I managed to get it lined up with the trailer and winched it on...only to bend the cross brace on the trailer where the engine hit it....the trailer running boards would not go back on the trailer unless I could straighten the crossmember  so unable to unload the mini, had to crawl under and wack it back in to some sort of shape, to eventually get it sorted  .
it was a difficult drive back with my clutch leg throbbing  .
but all in all it was well worth the pain as its in spectacular original condition with no rust showing and original paint and only 19k on the clock from new.
with only 9 mk2 autos showing on the how many left website....this one is definitely getting saved.

A great and rare find!

Still amazes me what's lurking in people's old garages.

Superb find Nick and a great bit of luck, I didn't realise there are so few autos left, mind you they probably didn't make that many to start with I'd imagine. Some nice period touches on it too with the Ritmo dash top and 'newfangled' reflective raised digit plates. Hope you manage to get it running ok, it would be nice to see another Mk2 at a few shows ;)

Edit : I wonder if there's any history with it... 'PH' is a Surrey marker and the Mann Egerton label on the plates might help...?
