"John and Cynthia had just moved into 'Kenwood' when they took us to see George, who was living with Patti Boyd in nearby Esher. There weren't any sofas or chairs and we all sat on huge, embroidered cushions on the floor and had drinks and snacks. It was my first experience of a hippy house and I wanted a home just like theirs.
All four Beatles were now the proud owners of customised, black Mini Coopers, with darkened electric windows. Ringo's had been delivered with an outsize boot, to accommodate his drum kit. John hadn't yet passed his driving test, but still insisted on driving us to have a picnic by the Thames. John, Cynthia, Julian, Jackie and me. He drove right across the golf course in Weybridge, laughing. This time we didn't stop to collect golf balls to sell back to the golfers. The money problem had been resolved.
When we remonstrated with John, laughing, about driving on the greens, he said, 'I'm a Beatle. I can do anything.'
At that time, that was the feeling, everywhere.
I think Julia might have her time line a bit askew, the Lennon's moved into Kenwood in '64 around the time of 'A Hard Day's Night', John passed his test in '65 (in George Martin's Triumph Herald convertible), John, George and Ringo didn't take delivery of their Radfords until early '66, and Ringo's was burgundy not black! ;)

Good God! That's boufin'

Anyone know how to get sick out a keyboard?

As an aside, JL kept his Ferrari, a '65 330GT, in Edinburgh. His cousin Stan ran a garage at 6 McDonald road, just off Leith walk from '63 - '69, and he looked after it. The garage later became the site of the first ever Kwik-fit.

He told me it had a 1071 lump in but I don't remember lifting the bonnet that day. Had a good butcher's inside it though, sat in the tart's front parlour seats trying to get the electric windows to work but no joy. Had a good look through his collection of spares and found a pair of GT40 seats, I should have made him an offer for those. He was very friendly but the b*llsh*t was flowing nicely.

He was probably pissed.

The Mercedes was already an old car in '79.

Something to look forward to later this year. 8-)

Peter Jackson’s Documentary "THE BEATLES: Get Back"
"New film features extensive, never-before-seen footage of the legendary band’s "Let It Be" recording sessions along with the entire iconic rooftop concert, fully restored. Compiled from over 55 hours of unseen footage, filmed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg in 1969, and 140 hours of mostly unheard audio recordings from the "Let It Be" album sessions, "The Beatles: Get Back" will showcase the warmth, camaraderie and humor of the making of the legendary band’s studio album, "Let It Be," and their final live concert as a group, the iconic rooftop performance on London’s Savile Row. "The Beatles: Get Back" will be released by The Walt Disney Studios in the United States and Canada on September 4, 2020, with additional details and dates for the film’s global release to follow. The new documentary brings to light much more of the band’s intimate recording sessions for "Let It Be" and their entire 42-minute performance on the rooftop of Apple’s Savile Row London office. While there is no shortage of material of The Beatles’ extensive touring earlier in their careers, "The Beatles: Get Back" features the only notable footage of the band at work in the studio, capturing John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr as they create their now-classic songs from scratch, laughing, bantering and playing to the camera.
Shot on January 30, 1969, The Beatles’ surprise rooftop concert marked the band’s first live performance in over two years and their final live set together. The footage captures interactions between the band members, reactions from fans and employees from nearby businesses, and comical attempts to stop the concert by two young London policemen responding to noise complaints.
A fully restored version of the original "Let It Be" film will be made available at a later date."

I would say that this forum is very civilized in comparison to other forums where i have visited.

And here the administrators are looking good that there is not to much bulls**t writen in the treads.

I think everyone can have his opinion. If someone thinks the otherone is a cock he can tell it via pm if he desires.
but otherwise just keep your opinion for yourself and don't insult people in the open treads.

Just my opinion...
I promise i won't buy another MkI...

Hi Mark,

I must assume you were involved with Banks Minis?

First of all, I'm sure all of the members of the forum will be disappointed to see how you have reacted to any comments made by any of us, I very much doubt that was ever anyone's intent.

Yes, several of us have expressed opinions on the unique modifications carried out on the car, myself included. If those caused offense, I appologise, and am sure others would do the same. These comments were directed to the changes made to what could be a very siginficant mini and certainly not to current tastes, I hope you'd agree? If it were on any other car, I suspect there may actually be a bit of a different view, but if it is the Lennon car, I'm sure you can see why opinions were divided.

Yes, I agree a couple of people have perhaps painted you as having a bit of 'salesman's flannel', As you say, most of us have never met you, so can't comment, but I certainly don't think we are as bad as you make out.

I would in fact say that of all mini forums this is the most friendly, respectful and knowledgable of all, and one where members are very helpfull and supportive of others, sharing information (you only need look at the research into the Beatles cars that has been openly shared and discussed as one example.)

So, as a moderator, I'm sorry you feel as you do. I can understand to an extent, and hope an apology would go some way to smoothing things. I'm sure all of us would be delighted to hear any more details about the car. We are genuinely interested in the cars and their history. I would also say it appears these conversations and meetings people discuss were many years ago? May it be that memories of details have faded and become distorted or confused over the years, that is all?

Regards,

Al

To be honest i also scanned the thread and really didn’t find anything that stood out as anything more than discussion.......certainly nothing obvious, maybe you could elaborate, as above?

I am sure no one intentionally wants to upset you.

It is however a fascinating subject, Minis and the Beetles!

And post I for one, hope is not closed down.

I think if you were the chap in Norfolk who sold bits on eBay and showed an enthusiast your precious mini, and then saw it being slated on the internet,as well as your character, then this would be offensive/upsetting which I can only imagine is who the user is.

To be honest, I have seen a lot worse modified mini's but it is as Pandora said, because of the history of the vehicle it is why it created the response it did, similar to the Clubman that got pulled out from the tunnels which caused some community upset. I think tasteful or not, when people have put a serious amount of work into something then a level of respect is fair.

I have been on many other forums, to an extent this one is more serious than others but that is not a bad thing, keeping it on topic is beneficial, stops threads becoming chaotic and the knowledge that the users have is invaluable.

Certainly an interesting read, I did not know the history or following of the Beatles and minis!

Thanks Ian.

Having read it, I’d have to say that unfounded character comments are really not on, so I can understand Mark being upset to an extent. However, there are so many fake Minis or ones with dubious histories out there and some people making false claims (another Norfolk resident springs to mind, maybe even two ) it’s not surprising that there is a lot of scepticism out there.

It’s a shame he didn’t introduce himself before launching in with the attack and casting general aspersions about members of this forum.

Mark, I think if you read the forum regularly and other threads you would find us a friendly, helpful bunch, with by far the most knowledgable people with reliable details about early Minis.
