Re: 850 badge - unknown
Correct, Its a Mini 850 "Export" badge.
When the MK1 was exported as an Austin 850 it wore one of those badges on the boot lid.

Hi Sandro,
This badge is pretty common here in Switzerland.
Every MK1 Austin Mini is equipped with this 850 badge, I have quite a few of them in stock.
Cheers, Glen

Re: 850 badge - unknown
Only Austins had that badge. Morrises had this one:
Sandro, that's the normal boot badge for the late mk1 Austin 850's here in Portugal.

Thank you all for the explanation
A very quick and effective lesson on the 850 badge!
@Ricardo, I suspected it, but couldn't find any pictures to prove it

Re: 850 badge - unknown
I recall seeing a couple of RHD early-mid seventies Mark 111 Minis in the UK with an Austin or Morris badge above the MINI 1000 boot badge - they looked the same as the Austin/Morris badges fitted to Allegos and Marinas.

Re: 850 badge - unknown
The MORRIS-850 badge was used in the Netherlands as well on the early ones.
DOWNTON Mini is what I like a lot.

The Morris_850 badge was used here in Portugal on early cars too, but I believe the Austin 850 was only introduced later as early cars had the Seven badge.

The prototypes were even more skinny than those.......36inter wrote:Love the skinny cross ply's in the picture.
"Issigonis had approached Dunlop, as he had done with the Minor, to develop a new type of tyre that would sit on a wheel that was 4.20 x 10in – almost wheelbarrow dimensions – and Dunlop managed to develop a suitable tyre for the car. The tyres that finally appeared on the Mini were 5.20in in width, rather wider than the prototypes’ 4.80in tyres, and it was as a direct result of the car’s unexpectedly good performance that this change was made."

Sandro, I know of someone here in The States that is working on an early Austin and is looking for that badge. Would you be interested in selling it?

Re: 850 badge - unknown
The mother of a school friend of mine in the early 1960s had a red Austin which had the Austin 850 badges. It seemed to be, as far as I can remember, a regular UK-type car with nothing unusual about it at all otherwise. It seemed to have been built between when Sevens stopped and Minis started. Or maybe it was mis-badged at the factory. Does anyone know of any others that escaped into the domestic market?
