new to forum and new purchase - 1961 Austin Seven YJB 626
Hi everyone,
My name is Jonathan, i'm new to the forum and wanted to share my recent purchase. It's our first mk1 mini, in the past we have owned an 2000 MPI (rust bucket) and we lived in Australia previously and owned a mid-70's clubman then.
From what I know of this mini, it has been sat in a barn for many years before being sold late last year to someone who has painted it in it's original colour, fitted new tyres and done some work on the brakes.
Someone on here may know of it.
Apart from the respray it looks to be fairly original in the engine bay and interior. There are some extra gauges and switches inside, oil pressure, water temp, seems to have a period lucas glass winsdsreen washer and a smiths electric fan installed.
We plan to use it regularly so wont be doing any major restoration work but I am looking forward to maintaining and improving it in some places but keeping it as original as possible.
Currently sorting out a few small issues - brake lights are stuck on (hydraulic switch issue), the handbrake is not working well at all and the IGN light is on (need to test the charging system). I am also in the process of sorting out historic tax status and mot exemption.
I'm sure i'll be on here asking questions, and will post up some more pictures.

Welcome to the forum Jonathan.
Wow. That’s a nice car, congratulations.
I saw the photos from the Barons auction site. Apart from the heater being bypassed, washer pump, and the hook ups for the extra gauges, that engine bay looks mostly factory to my eye. Not sure having the fuel pump on the firewall is correct for a 61 though. I wonder if that mileage could be genuine - the car certainly looks to have very little wear inside, and with an original looking engine bay it’s quite possible it only did those 13,531 miles since 1961
The Smiths snail fan was a factory option - if you order a heritage certificate it might even be listed in the details from the original build record. That Lucas screen wash bottle/pump is unusual; looks like someone might have fitted it aftermarket - it’s the same as Lucas Screenjet used on early land rovers etc. How is it controlled by the driver? Looks like there is a cable running back to the extra dash panel?
That extra row of switches below the dash, and the oil temp and “boost” gauge on the steering column panel are interesting period add-ons. The ‘missing’ gauge in the middle looks like a 4 screw fixing for aviation type gauges, perhaps something like this. Seems like a lot of extra instrumentation for a road car of the period - I wonder if the car has some competition history - for example early time trials?
Very, very nice, well done.
ps. PM sent with some additional comments

That's cool.
I'm running a very similar boost gauge in my mini, both the extra gauges are aviation, WW2 era buy the look of it. Does the temp gauge work? I ask as it looks like a capillary gauge type.

Not sure if the temp gauge works yet, stil waiting for the dvla to sort out the tax status and mot exemption, took it for a cheeky drive around the neighbourhood but not long enough to see it come up to temp, as soon as i can give it a proper drive il report back!59fan wrote:That's cool.
