1275GT Racing

Post by Tecs021260 »

The 1275 GT was FIA approved with 7"X12" wheels. Do someone here remember what tyre make and seizes that were used?

In what regulations? Dunlop CR84s were used in Group 1 Appendix J I think, but that was on 5.5 wheels.

As above, the GKN challenge wheels I had were shod with period CR84's (even had mini challenge moulded in them)

Q. Haven't 1275 GT and early Clubman's started to be come the latest must have?

Is this because, like me, I was born in the 60's but grew up in the 70's? So remember GT's rallying and racing?

It's a combination of what you say, plus the fact that Mk1 Cooper S's are demanding very high prices and we're all looking to what's next!

Paul, that is perfectly correct. I was born in the mid fifties and 15 years old in 1970. By then all the top runners had Mk3 Cooper S or Mini Clubman cars. When building a competition car back then why would you have build an older model. The Mk3 Cooper Ss are still gaining in value as are the 1275 GT and the ordinary Clubman 1098cc and 998 cars. In fact the Mk3 Cooper S and the 1275 GT cars are ten times more rare than Mk1 Cooper S cars that now seem very common at Mini shows :D :D :D

From my Dunlop (1980is) papers their racing tyre then, was 155/500-12 for 6"-7" wheel.
I think I recall a Goodyear ultragrip 12" for rallycross, too?
Homologated 7" wheel I have seen was a thick gauge version of Minilite, available from 1969.

I had a chat with the Boopspeed owner at The Pride of Longbridge a couple of years ago. He had a folder full of pictures of various cars but couldn't be persuaded to lend them or post them up anywhere.

I've not seen the car for a few years but I guess it is still about somewhere

I have dragged my 1275GT racer out of storage for the Mini 60 Race in Portland Oregon this year, The subframes are done, and the engine is done. The bodywork, however, is now in rapid progress...
Not looking too racy at the moment!

I have a set of alloy skinned doors and glassfibre Bonnet/boot to go on the car. Trying to get all of the grubby stripping work done. The underside of the car and engine bay is already painted glacier white.

What road tyres can you get to fit the GKN Silverstones?
Have a set of 5 for my GT and would be good to use them.
Cheers Gary

Yokohama have some decent options in 12" of you are looking for something sporty, both A048 and A032 are available. I bought some more "road-friendly" 12" tires from Falken a few years ago, I will report back shortly with the model #

I would dearly love a set of GKN's, if you opt to not use them, keep me in mind.

Something in my mind tells me that this car was orange over white. The two stripes under Wadham Stringer were blue and red, as per the Leyland Helmet.
