Bee Gees drummer Colin Peteron's Italian stallion and '66 Broadspeed GT, an early recipient of the new-fangled 'reverse engraved' perspex number plates, photo taken 1969...

Edit - is that a dead lock to the left of the door aperture...?

I think it is likely to be a switch for an alarm, note the "Watch Dog" sticker in the window above. Sounds like an alarm to me.

Ta Mark ;) . I've got thousands of pics of '60s and '70s Minis on file and a surprising number have these fitted in different positions, usually close to the doors, not just the coachbuilt stuff either. I went to have a look at a Rover P5B Coupe last year which had one fitted on one of the front wings.

Found an old photo of my first Mini (and my first car), a '77 1000, it lasted all of fours months in my carelss hands... note the neighbour having trouble with his Mini...

You should have done the honourable thing mate and removed all those 'orrible black grilles and crappy plastic wheel trims and tossed them into a skip when nobody was looking... ;)

Note the alarm key fitted in the rear side panel of my first '65 Mini back in 1974. My alarm was a Selmar.

That's almost certainly a still from the unbroadcast Dr Who episode "Invasion of the insipid Minis'" where John Pertwee saves the world from being consumed by evil light yellow minis with dodgy black grilles.
