Re: Just a nice period picture
It is documented that Freeborough's rallycross car ( not his Works spec / built rally car EDB 90C ) was built from an ex Works shell bought for 25 quid.LMM76C wrote:
Freeborough probably got the (ex-Nurburgring??), ex-Corsica, ex-Lydden rallycross Gp6 GRX5D for a song, maybe as a rolling shell.

Re: Just a nice period picture
The surviving Dunham and Haines car is definitely a MK1 version of GRX5D albeit with a Mk2 grille and rear lights fitted.

Talking of rallycross. A couple of snaps before the sport went mega costly.
At least the Minor's Mini related.

Re: Just a nice period picture
Dave, agreed, autocross and rallycross was fantastic fun in the sixties and seventies. What happened rallycross over here was the arrival of the MG Metro 6R4. I still can remember well Ronnie White saying that 4-wheel drive will destroy the sport and ruin it for the clubman racer and he was proved right. I remember back then every event had always over hundred entries and now twenty-five would be a full entry

Re: Just a nice period picture
Just finished ready for the 1973 Scottish Autocross season, outside my Bodyshop,
as part sponsor, spanner man and body repairer we went on to win both Scottish
Autocross championships, also Rallycrossed at Boyds Quarry,Croft and Knockhill.
body repairs were regularly required
couple of weeks later trying hard at Knockhill,
got to agree with Supersonic on the costs of Rallycross remember at Kirkiston we were spannering
for another Scottish driver when he out drove John Welch in his 4WD Getrag Escort with a 2WD MK1
Escort,and the ensuing argument
For me enough was enough when we started looking at hand cut tyres.

Love the upside-down Mini Minor grille on the Minor - gives it a decidedly happy look

I see the picture says it's Milan, but the number plates suggest Genoa.
After a quick search on Google Earth I found Corso Guglielmo Marconi in Genoa. Still looks the same, well nearly.

Re: Just a nice period picture
I think it was pretty much the whole GRX5D. I know who has it, or who had in 15 years ago. It may be the 66 Monte car, not sure.66Traveller wrote:BOO 911F was of course built from the discarded ex Works Mk1 GRX5D shell when GRX5D was re-shelled as a Mk2 by Abingdon - hence the Tartan Red and brocade...

Re: Just a nice period picture
Do you mean the car you know of 15 years ago may be the Monte car? - the Freeborough car certainly wasn't. See history previously referred to.Costafortune wrote:I think it was pretty much the whole GRX5D. I know who has it, or who had in 15 years ago. Re: Just a nice period picture
It wasn't just Pop stars that had Minis in the '60s, even some up and coming comedians had them too
