European recovery cover
Hi, were off to Lemans thursday and just wondered if anyone can recomend a recovery insurance in case 's-it' happens. As there are 6 minis and a midget going all 30yrs plus i am a little worried about having to leave a car behind if something goes wrong. We need a cover to get the car back to the u.k. but having a quick look it seems most companies are reluctant to cover such old cars. On the upside there are two full time mechanics, tools and spares going with us so it would have to be serious for us to leave a car behind. Thanks Steve

Have you tried going through your car insurance company? They can quite often get you a good deal. I was with Classicline when BCR broke its gearbox in France and the assistance (via Europ Assistance I think) was excellent.
Although we actually fixed the car in France it could have been repatriated.

Last year I took a 1968 BMW to the nurburgring. My passenger had european breakdown cover with the AA. Ironically I didn't even make it on the track. As we arrived in the village my right front brake caliper seized as well as my left drive shaft. Madness. The AA arranged to pick up the car from the nurburgring on a flat bed. They ordered us a taxi to the nearest city where they had a rental car already waiting (the bloke even had to open late just to give us the car). We drove the rental to Calais where the AA had already booked us a hotel room. In the morning we got the ferry to Dover to find another rental car waiting for us. We drove home and my BMW was delivered to my door 4 days later. Amazing service. I was massively impressed. I didn't think service like that still existed in the modern age.

I agree with Simon. Check with your insurance company when you ask for a Green Card/extension of cover to France.

I ended up going with the AA for exactly that reason, the rest of the companies did not cover older cars.
Only ever used them once, but they were very good. Thankfully I wasn't affected by the way they used to take you to a edge of the local are coverage and transfer you to another AA truck (or AA accredited company). I heard that they may have stopped that now but my Dad was affected by that and a 2.5 hr trip can take ALL day!
