engine mountings

Post by IAIN »

It has just taken me 2 hours to fit the engine mounting bolts to the front subframe  should take about 15 minutes.

I only ever fit genuine 21A1902 mountings because they are the only one's I found that fitted properly.

Guess what you get in a MG Rover packet now ?

They don't have the part No. stamped on them any more ! they look cheap ! they are cheap mounting's that don't fit.

And they cost £12 each.

Rant over!

The only one that we have found to fit properly in the last year or so are the Mini Spares 21A1902ST, which have the captive nuts. These retain the mounting bolt hole spacing of the original Rover ones. The current Rover ones have an SLP suffix on the end of the part number which denotes they are not from the original manufacturer. Difficulty fitting the Rover ones and most of the aftermarket ones is a common complaint.

Common shop process now. Take old mount. Match new mount to it. File holes in new mount to match old mount. THEN install new mount.

It wasn't that the holes were out of line, it's the mountings being too thick.
That made the engine sit too high and impossible to force the engine down enough to get the holes lined up.

The only way I could get them in was removing the two long bolts below the radiator,to allow the mounting bracket to move.
Bolt the mounts to the subframe, then grind a point on the long bolts and force them back in lifting the unit till they caught a thread.

I would have expected this from cheap mounts thats the annoying bit.

Any make of mounting you could recomend as a good fit I will try next time.

Unfortunately though, you end up with upside down bolts :o , and usually end up chewing the threads trying to get them lined up
