Engine Identification

Post by rolesyboy »

Hi. I have aquired a 1275 engine and box, I suspect Austin 1300 origin. Sits on a Mini 4 sync 22G1128 gearbox (not Austin 1100/1300 as bolts go in through bottom of remote) Chrome original (?) rocker cover, 11 stud head and twin 1 1/4 SUs. How will I know what car the engine would have been originally fitted to? It has no engine number. Are there any other block marks or castings that would help me? Cheers. Mark

Could be a MK3 S motor. Check the area behind the thermostat housing to see if 12g1805 is stamped on the flat head.

Can't see the markings behing thermostat housing but took rocker box off and found 12G940. Double valve springs. Anyone know about numbers cast in the block?? Also in addition to the 22G1128 on the gearboc there are a series of numbers on the opposite side of the casing. What do these refer to please? Cheers

Does sound like an Austin 1300, look at where the gearbox attaches to the remote, it will probably bolt on with the bolts running horizontally and not vertically like a Mini.

Hi Giff. Bolts run upwards as per Mini gearbox (see 1st post) so definitely correct box. Its the engine that I want to identify and without an engine number I need to find out which block markings will help me do this. Cheers anyway. Mark

Had a rummage earlier and these are my findings.
1300Gt 11Stud block. 12G1279 and 102 4?
Dizzy 41416 J 45D4.
1300 9 stud block. 12G1279 forgot to look at the other numbers but they were different to above.

Got another short motor with 11 stud, but I know that was drilled and tapped for a 11 stud so is more than likely a 1300 A series.

Check out the Front plate (under the timing cover) and if it looks like the pic below the engine is more than likely out of a Austin / morris 1300 ADO16.
