Re: My mk2 cooper
Thanks,
I managed to paint other half today, unfortunately I had a little accident and got a serious run on the a panel, will probably end up repainting this area as looks a little big to flat and polish out, must have been trying to get it to flat. Well at least it's a lesson I have learnt.

And the dreaded run, can't believe how bad it is

Re: My mk2 cooper
We've all done them!
Being an isolated panel, you could have wiped it off when wet. As it takes a while before it should be recoated.
We use a safety blade sometimes to shave them down before flatting. This way it wont show so much.

Re: My mk2 cooper
Thanks,
Will remember that for next time as if I had wiped it off could have probably blown it back in this afternoon, now I have to wait a few days before trying to sand it out, which I doubt will work to well so will end up repainting it anyway, just the sanding is a bit awkward, but it's good practice

Re: My mk2 cooper
Thanks,
I do have another couple of very small runs that I am confident I can flat out, just this big one that's a problem.
I have a run razor and run file but have had limited success with them before, never know this one might be the practice I need.

Re: My mk2 cooper
Been a long winter without doing much, but decided to do a little more on the mini.
Repainted the a panel that I had the run accident on last year

Then painted one of the doors, unfortunately not got enough room in the painting area to do both at same time

Close up of finish, got a few nibs to flat out but happy with it

Then as I couldn’t do anymore in paint area decided to strip and clean the h4 carbs I had purchased, surprised as they were in perfect condition under the dirt, they are off an mga so have fitted the 30 deg bowl on lh carb, and started to modify to fit mini manifold, still have a few things to do, have ordered other bowl and parts I need to complete the rebuild today so hopefully get them ready and packed away for safe keeping shortly

Re: My mk2 cooper
That looks great Daz. What set up did you have to spray, as in the gun and nozzle apperture?

Re: My mk2 cooper
Due to my restricted setup and to minimise overspray I have used a devilbiss sri pro with 1.2mm tip and transtech ts1 aircap, to help with larger areas I used farecla disposable cups with adaptor, find them very good and gun is easier to cleanup afterwards, I do however use a good water trap and coalescing filter, followed by a small devilbiss water trap on the gun, still learning though,
I found this gun and tip was ok for high build primer and 2k gloss, although high build went on a little rough as ideally needed larger tip, but as was being flatted was ok.
By trial and error I now apply one light coat and leave to go tacky then put heavier coats on afterwards

Re: My mk2 cooper
I have a Clarke industrial 3hp 14cfm with 100 litre receiver situated in another garage and air is piped through, mainly so when I use an airfed I am not feeding myself with the paint fumes, also the longer run helps to get the moisture out as have a couple of traps in the piping

Re: My mk2 cooper
Thanks be better after a light flatting, hopefully other door will be done Saturday,
spent An hour on the carbs tonight, fitted other 30 deg bowl and finalised the throttle linkage, just got to work on the choke now, have bent the levers to get clearance so hoping can make do with the mga ones, I should be able to get the return springs down to the heat shield when I fit it, just need some spacers. They are cheaper at David manners than anywhere else so will get some Saturday.

Re: My mk2 cooper
Put some paint on the other door this morning, and popped to mini spares to get a few more bits for the carbs, still need to sort the throttle return springs and choke connections but looking better now.

Re: My mk2 cooper
Spent a full day flatting the paint yesterday, going through p1500, p2000, p4000 and finally p6000 trizact. Pretty pleased with it although had one cut through on rear panel that fortunately I can blend quite easily. Just need to decide what product to follow up with now, any advice appreciated, I was thinking a very fine finishing compound like Scholl Concepts s40 and a soft pad.

Re: My mk2 cooper
Finally reached the stage of finishing the painting, needs a little more flatting and polishing but nothing below p4000 will be needed now, interior needs a good clean up due to dust and light overspray but from a small area I tested won’t take much effort,
Really pleased with it, not 100% perfect due to being a home paint job but will give the overall effect I want. Plenty more work to do but it feels good to get to this stage, won’t be taking the booth down until all polishing completed just in case any problems.

Re: My mk2 cooper
Not much to add as been on holiday but have started refurbing and refitting some more parts now
Rear lights finished

Then one headlight, need a seal for the other and minispares showing no stock, was lucky with buckets as found some nos original steel buckets

Then fitted pedal box and master cylinders along with refurbed loom and a few other parts,

C4F2FDC2-F6F5-46F7-BEF3-FB358A4910FA by darren carr, on Flickr
Have a few more bits to sort out and refurb but pretty pleased with ones I have completed so far, hopefully get hydro pipes , main brake pipe and fuel pipe sorted so can get subframes fitted shortly, just seem to be struggling finding much spare time at the moment
Also have a problem with the windscreen wiper assembly as one of the wiper boxes is scrap, hopefully got one coming shortly so can get that all fitted.
Hopefully get more done next week
