CKD COOPER

On the off-chance someone may have a CKD (complete knock down) Cooper/S that is planning to visit Beaulieu this year, 12th June, a free ticket is on offer, would be good to have one within the main display.

Mine are still CKD :lol:

Know someone with a portugeese built CKD in monotone black. Could ask whether he is interested.

I have sent an email to the guy with the black car, so far no reply. The main problem this year is that Beaulieu clashes with the IMM, most of the Irish CKD cars are off to the IMM.

Hi, I'm rebuilding a Portuguese CDK MKII Cooper, nearly completed now.

But as far as I'm aware, I haven't seen all these differences.

Original color was Snowberry white and a black roof, and all seems tobe identical as British standard cars.

In what way were a CKD diffrent?

This is a long shot, but you could try contacting the owner of Bodge Engineering in Knysna, South Africa (http://www.bodge.co.za/contact.html). He has a "time warp" 1071 Cooper S (SA CKD) that has apparently been photographed for reference purposes for the SA Cooper/S section in the upcoming new edition of the "Bible".

Probably cost a fortune to get the car to the UK, but perhaps they could send the pictures :?:

A bit too far away, I doubt if MCR funds would stretch :( but many thanks for the information, will get in touch, be interesting to see what the locally sourced interior trim was like.

CKD, complete knock down, basically a kit Mini/Cooper that was sent out from BMC to other assembly plants around the world, these cars were often painted non BMC colours and usually had locally sourced interior trim. All cars are recorded within the archive at Gaydon, abeit just chassis number and destination.

The vast majority were sent to Australia, the nearest country was Ireland, they had two plants, one for Morris and Austin, Irish assembled cars also had a 'Shamrock' etched into the glass. Billy Mulqueen's CKD is a 998 Cooper finished in dark green with a white roof, interior trim has the same basic style seats that you would expect in say an almond green car, except they are black and red, all panels are not vinyl covered and are black, rather like what you would expect in a mini van of the same era to have.

If not so far away from Beaulieu I would attend, being one MCR member since several years! I'm in Lisbon, Portugal and owner of one CKD Austin Cooper S MK1, that - according Gaydon registrars - left Abingdon October 1964 and was registered January 1965 by J.J. Gonçalves Sucrs in Oporto, Portugal Austin dealer. From one group of three MK1 Ss (GE-90-00, GE-90-01 [mine] and GE-90-02), "00" and "02" were used and abused by local 'works' drivers , respectively Manuel Lopes Giao and Alfredo Cesar Torres (being this one the later Rally TAP /Rally Vinho do Porto / Rally de Portugal Director) and "02" bought by one private (fortunately...) mostly in Rallies and both racing for JJ Gonçalves Sucrs. "02" apparently dísappeared , following my search, but "00" still very active in the hands of local Fernando Soares (seen last Algarve Historic Festival, powered by Swittune engine, and still in its 'original' colour, Green), and mine enjoying one gold retirement very far away from race tracks and forests... ;)

That's not what I was told when I contacted an archive researcher at this address hmcarch@heritage-motor-centre.co.uk

They told me they have no records of CKD cars.

If anyone has a better contact there, who can provide information, please let me know.

Heritage can 'date' any mini CKD or UK supplied by the chassis number and can issue a 'date cert' to that effect , they cannot issue a conventional 'heritage cert' for CKD cars

Fine, thanks for the infos.

When I dismanteled my dad's Portuguese CKD, the only thing that was diffrent from an British car was the headlining!

I'll put the pictures soon in the "cars and project" section.

We had CKD cars here in NZ but the Coopers came fully assembled. Someone local tell me why that is? *waits for AL or James*

Probably just a logistics thing, and to make it easier to tell when we re-shell a Cooper into a NZ shell.....
