Rattling gear box, particularly 2nd

Post by mk1rally »

Just brought my daughters sporkpack back from the lock up and on the way back something let go in the box.

Boxes are not my strong point, but I still have drive (maybe elimnates diff pin?) but it rattles badly in all gear's, really bad in second and TBH I coasted home the few hundred yards and turned it off.

Any starters for 10??

If it looks serious I still have an Mpi engine and box from a 98 cooper

difficult to guess, could be anything :!: , but my mate replaced the centre main bearing :?: in his sportpack's box as it was shot. It rattled but still drove a short distance.

Agreed, there are many possible causes, but centre main bearing springs to mind.

I assume that you've checked the obvious potential culprits like pot joints and CV's before delving into the box?

could be a number of things

what ever it is i would not start it again, as what ever has let go slightly could end up going in the engine,

sounds like the engine is coming out, for a bit if investigating, and your chance to play with a gearbox, i just done evny you getting that mpi engine out with the mass of wires and bolts you cant get to.

keep us posted

If the noise was louder in first and second and under load it might also be the idler gear bearing.

If you haven't removed an mpi unit....

The mpi looks like it would be difficult to remove but it's easy. You just disconect the engine loom at the bulkhead plug, and leave all the connectors and injection system intact, it will all come out the top still on the engine.
Then you remove the gearbox and put it in the bin.

Sorry :D

I had a center main roller, collaps in my Green Mini, it started jump out of 4th gear,
but could be forced back in, but after a couple of days -------- surprice -------- no 4th gear

so when I built the box, for the turbo, I checked it first ?
It still worked, but the seperator was already disintegrating, and a few balls was loose. I took it apart, and gave it a new center main bearing

I heard from someone, who "knows stuff" that its the additives in the gazoline, that makes the nylon seperator brittle, so it finally collaps.

Well, it stripped some the teeth off 3rd gear, like most of them!! must have been waiting to happen. I honestly was not giving it any beans!

Rebuilt now and ready to go ...and Nial, changed the diff from a 2.76 to a 3.1...now I have a 4 speed box instead of a 3 speed and a overdrive!! (and it's on my daughters Sportpack).

Thanks for all you help here chaps, much appreciated.
