telling the dvla you have swapped the engine
been reading peoples tales of dealing with the dvla on the net regarding changing engine sizes...hoping someone on here might have successfuly updated their v5 recently and could advise how they went about it. I want to change from the old 850 to a 1275. From what i can see i think i will need to provide a receipt from a garage for a new engine being installed into the car? And also measurements of the new bore size? I'm mid restoration at the moment will i have to have an mot before i can update the v5? My mate owns a garage so the 'receipt' would not be a problem......or do i have to do something different? Thanks for your help

No, you simply the 'receipt' along with a letter from yourt mate (who of course carried out the swap for you) off with the ammended V5.
i told them I fitted an engine I bought off a friend and did the work myself and it became a total hassle. in the end I got a local specialist to write a letter confirming that the engine I said was in my car, was indeed the engine I said it was, and that it was of the size i claimed.
This useless bit of burocracy kept them happy.

Pans advice is 100% correct. Just send your V% off with a letter saying what he says & it will come back easily. The thing that the DLVA are bothered about is the tax classification of the car now it depends to some extent on engine capacity.
Its ludicrous that people in our situation find themselves having to tell porkie pies, but it apears to be the only way to go nowadays.

How long has this rule been in place?
When I altered the engine size from 850 to 1275 for the S replica, I didn't have to provide anything at all. That was maybe 5 years ago though.

They say it was introduced to combat 'ringing', which I fully understand.
They did agree that it doesn't fit well with older cars, but it's a universal system, so has to be applied evenly to all cars / V5s
still, it's only a wee white lie!

I was chatting with the guy who sold you that engine Andrew, he says it was only an 850 so you're fine !
