Re: old garages
Thanks Surfblue63, I'm sure I wouldn't recognize the place, now a days, my visits up north are normally to my old home area of Ryton and Hexham, and a "within the speed limits" re-run of foolish teenage 60's cross country races from there to Lindisfarne, via Rothbury, thankfully non of us died and we never got caught, ooh err officer.
Ian.

Re: old garages
Away for a few days up north and have been to Hexham today amongst other places along the wall. Lovely area with some fantastic mini driving roads!

Re: old garages
You are so right, those roads just cry out for a bit of welly, even less traffic in the sixties, from Hexham to Rothbury you frequently never saw another car.

Re: old garages
I'm looking for photos or any information about a BMW dealership that was in Gloucester in the 70's called Cotswold Service Station, Cotswold House, London Road. It has nothing to do with the current Cotswold BMW and a quick search shows a dentist at this location. Anyone on here from that neck of the woods remember it ?.

The Hattons business was established in Southport. In the Hattons (Southport) Limited company accounts for year to 30 September 1975 there are listed 6 subsidiary companies: Hattons (St Helens) Limited, Hattons (Burnley) Limited, Hattons (Wigan) Limited, Dentons Green Garage Limited, H H Timberlake Limited, Whitesides (Southport) Limited.surfblue63 wrote:I found this in the October 1962 issue of Austin Magazine. Unfortunately there is no address, and I have searched and can not find anything. My guess it's probably been demolished by now.
Hattons (Burnley) Limited was established 02 Nov 1954 and the company has been dissolved in 1982.
I have written a blog post about Hattons (St Helens) Ltd in my series about Triumph car dealers: http://vitessesteve.blogspot.co.uk/2017 ... h-car.html

Re: old garages
iirc by the mid sixties they also had a huge area of the old railway goods yard in Blaydon from which they distributed the BMC range to local dealers, by about 66/67 the Newcastle showrooms, service area and stores department were very swish, modern hanger like structures with lots of glass, a trawl through local papers, Blaydon courier, Evening chronicle might have some grand opening type picys.graham.codling wrote:Just acquired a May 1961 mini minor for resto supplied by Charles buist on st Mary's place Newcastle does anyone have any pics of this distributor/dealer .the chassis details are stamped on a brass plate next to the factory chassis plate .also the first reg date is also stamped on this plate was this a usual thing to do as I've never seen this done? .will get some pics up shortly .last on the road in 1977 been in dry storage since .

My first car was an Almond Green 850 super de luxe bought originally by my great uncle from the Automobile Palace Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll-llandtsiliogogogoch. Good job there was no dealer sticker -might have covered the side as well as the rear window!

I can't find a period photo to see the difference but think it didn't changed too much..

Re: old garages
There were pictures posted by an ex forum member who went in there after he died and 'cleared him out' as he so nicely put it. Quite a few talented engineers worked from very modest premises! Ralph Broad was another that springs to mind!
Re: old garages
Does any one have any information on Turvey & Co Ltd of Sunderland? Were they BMC, Austin, Morris?

Turvey & Co were at Holmeside Garage and were Morris distributors as well as MG and Wolseley retail dealers.surfblue63 wrote:Does any one have any information on Turvey & Co Ltd of Sunderland? Were they BMC, Austin, Morris?
