My new project - 1965 Morris Cooper S - HOY 500D
Having finished the pick up, I needed to find another project to occupy my spare time.
I've known about this car since the early 90's but the owner has never been interested in selling it, even though I've tried on numerous occasions to prise it out of his hands. He is happy to sell bits of Minis (many of you have purchased his spares from me already and long may it continue ). However, the last few times I've raided his stock of parts, he has shown more of an interest in selling the car. A month or so ago, I offered him a figure which he accepted after consideration. Today I brought it home and for the first time in many years is in a completely dry and warm garage. Prior to that it has been in his barn since around 1979 (along with four other Minis), that has been gradually falling down around them and although covered over with tarps and 'crap' it has suffered as it was the most exposed to the elements.
HOY 500D is a March 65 built 1275 Morris Cooper S in that great colour Surf Blue/OEW. It is a single tank car with apparently no options, which could explain why it was not registered until 4 November 1966. The car was sent to Stewart and Ardern, as confirmed by the original S&A label attached to one of the chassis number plate screws.
As the pictures show it is VERY rough but has almost all of its original Powder Blue/Grey Gold Brocade interior, including superb seats. It is in its original shell. The engine is probably not the original one but is a thin flange 1275 that come along with a 333 box.
Unfortunately it is not on the DVLA computer but some documentation has come to light that could help recover the number and the owner has a continuation RF60 logbook 'somewhere'.
I have spoken to the wife of the original owner, who sadly at 86, is not very well. He does remember the car and they are looking for any photos or records they may have although they do not hold out a lot of hope.
The plan is to restore the car over a long period (see pics to see why !!!) to factory spec, apart from perhaps the nice Speedwell rear anti-roll bar it already has fitted.
Well....... all comments welcome

The rear subframe has all but rotted away, hence the rear wheel angles. It was a bloody nightmare to move it.
The actual inner 2/3rds of the floor pan appears to be pretty sound, which is probably what has kept it fairly straight.
What a shame I couldnt have got it out of him 25 years ago

what a fantastic find Andrew! Lots of work to do there but with your skills absolutely no problem at all! Just goes to show that they are indeed still out there unrestored and waiting! Looking forward to seeing this one take shape. Well done!

Nonetheless, a great find and rescue Andrew. One of my favourite colours too! Good luck with the restoration.

It looks a bit worse than just the hydro going down.Andrew1967 wrote:The rear subframe has all but rotted away, hence the rear wheel angles. It was a bloody nightmare to move it.
Take it it once had a flip fibre front end?

Bit of "T" Cut & a fettle of the brakes & Tyres & it will be right as rain
What a cracking project! Good to know that another will be saved. Trim looks superb, it even has its original brass grille.
