If the tolerances were within Spider's recommendations, which method is the most reliable, magic wand diff cover or remote plus the (hard to find) conversion parts?

The big problem with any magic wand set up is that they have quite long levers with a fairly small slot in the bigger ball for rotational location. The slots and the peg wear quickly and badly and the smaller ball on the end not far behind.
The other down side of these set ups is that because of the angle of the gear lever, there is always has side pressure on the selector fork of the selected gear. Fitting hose or weights to them to quieten down any rattle they get, really only makes matters worse in the long run.
