My mk2 cooper

Thought it was about time I added some content to the site and show where I am with my project as may be asking a few questions shortly when I start putting things back together

Here are a few details of my current project and progress so far, it's a 1968 mk2 cooper that has been owned by me since approx 1984 although restored pretty poorly back then, it had been off the road since 1998 so I decided to redo the restoration once I had finished my mk1 project.

It's easier for me to say what's left of original shell, basically bulk head and cross member, upper and lower dash rails, upper of both side panels and rear panel, rear shelf, b posts and roof. Everything else I have replaced with a mixture of mainly m machine, heritage and a few magnum panels.

I am now nearing end of body work so just a few pics to show work so far

filling is one job where a lot of work doesn't make anything look different

I have almost finished main body filling now and will remove a door and start on one of those this weekend.

At least I have something to fill in the time whilst waiting for filler to go off prior to sanding, seems to work ok so far

Looks like you are doing a proper job their!

What filler are you using?

We use a lot of Upol Fantastic ...its the lightest one you can buy and blocks down nice.

Thanks, I am also using upol fantastic and epoxy high build primer. Have some dolphin glaze for minor imperfections later, I like upol stuff and find it sands easily with p180 paper.

Great work Daz, you are inspiring me to dig out my 68 Cooper and restore that (again).

What month 68 was your car built ?

The "sponge of doom" certainly did a good job of rotting out the top of the A pillar.

It's a June 1968 and registered on 11th June day before I was born so couldn't wish for a better one really. Been abused a lot and had 1300gt engine in when I got it, now has an original 998 cooper engine but with 4 synchro s ratio box which I will keep rather than fit a 3 synchro. I will be modifying it slightly by following the downton no 4 touring spec to hopefully make it a little better, and it will keep its Dunlop d1 alloys. I am really looking forward to getting it back on the road.
Yes the sponge really made a mess of it, pity no repair sections available for this area though

Finally got a little update, I have removed remaining paint and spent a few weekends filling and block sanding,







Then yesterday managed to get a couple of coats of high build on, so now the flatting can begin

For a Mini that looked pretty solid to start that is an amazing heap of panels removed from it.Are they heritage rear quarter panels you used?

The rear quarters are magnum panels. Not a bad fit and a considerable saving over heritage. I should get it flatted with p320 this week and then can work on any outstanding imperfections, problem with primer is it makes everything look good

Just about to paint my Mk 2 after wasting 2 years in a body shop. Brought it home in Nov 17 & cracked on ,front end, re build doors , new boot floor....... I am sure you know what it takes , time wise & work involved. Should be lots of them about next year, but maybe not many in Antelope. Will paint roof white as I like the two tone look. Thanks to Callum for his posts, a real inspiration.

After seeing loads of people having trouble with Photobucket new terms of use I have set up a Flickr account, not sure if it will continue working but have posted an update to test

It's getting there but still more work required
Gave it a few coats of 2k high build and been flatting with guide coat only a few areas left now that require a little work
