Don't worry it will buff out with a little elbow grease and some Abingdon Works Wonder Polish.

Re: LRX828E crashed ?
Smashed up on the '67 Acropolis when Rauno drove it. Didn't he hit a car coming the other way?? I think he ended up in hospital. Either way they built a new one and shipped it to Oz, where it still resides.

I've got a red Cooper, I might slap that number on the bonnet and just apply for the logbook for it just to see how far I could actually get.

You wouldn't be the first to try that!Pete wrote:I've got a red Cooper, I might slap that number on the bonnet and just apply for the logbook for it just to see how far I could actually get.

Maybe but as DVLC torched all the records of all the scrapped and exported cars I can take my pick....mini63 wrote:......and hence BMC UK sold LRX828E to BMC Australia.

I'm sure I wouldn't! And quite a few others, don't get me started.Simon776 wrote:You wouldn't be the first to try that!Pete wrote:I've got a red Cooper, I might slap that number on the bonnet and just apply for the logbook for it just to see how far I could actually get.
Right, where did I put that Browning book with all the works Mini chassis numbers in......
I could be the lucky owner of a genuine ex works Mini by Blyton, early retirement here we come!

The wee car we looked at earlier this year over here fits that registration? Why not join the club? There seems to be no problem ringing an ex-works car from what many of us see

Re: LRX828E crashed ?
I never quite understand how some of these threads end back on the difficult topic of Works cars resurrected from unusual circumstances. But they do and that's life.
LRX828E was written off and a new car built for one event before being sold to BMC Australia. I don't think anyone doubts that as the history is quite clear. No chance of a believable 828E turning up in the U.K. Or Europe.
Now my question, does anyone know what happened to LRX830E after the 1967 Acropolis? It appears to have disappeared. Possibly scrapped? I don't want to start a discussion about it now popping up from a long lost S she'll, door, boot or any other part, please.
Have a great weekend with your cars.
Cheers Syd

Re: LRX828E crashed ?
A car carrying 830E was sold from Abingdon in 1967 and was much rallied by the late Ronnie McCartney. I have seen the green logbook for this car years ago in Ireland..Syd wrote:I never quite understand how some of these threads end back on the difficult topic of Works cars resurrected from unusual circumstances. Actually, I can't find photos of LRX830E with McCartney, nor can I remember it in period.Syd wrote:Thanks for the prompt response. Has anyone got pictures or any other details?

The assumption has to be that it was the original Acropolis Group2 car that was sold to him. After the Acropolis, the reg number was carried on one of the 1000cc Marathon de la Route Group6 cars (erroneously referred to as Gp5 somewhere) but was probably "borrowed" for that essentially race car that had to be road registered to drive from the start to the Nurburgring for this "rally". That race 830E was crashed wasn't it (written off or re-used without the number 830E?) so the number went with the Gp2 car to McCartney. He may well have modified it to effectively Gp6 for Irish national events and even the Circuit of Ireland (which had a Gp5/6 category), so photos would help.
