Changes To Engine Details For Historic Vehicles (DVLA)

This change applies to all tax-exempt pre-1973 Mini's and has been agreed due to the potential difficulties in providing supporting evidence/documentation for old/scrap replacement engines for historic/classic cars and also due to the fact that they are not taxed based on engine size/capacity in any case:

DVLA have now confirmed that this policy has been reviewed and that it will no longer be necessary for keepers of vehicles in the Historic class – date of manufacture before 1 Jan 1973 – to provide evidence to support an engine change notification. (18/02/2011)

The word 'minor' is used in the context that the Federation considered that a change of engine was a small alteration to a classic vehicle.
The requirement for documentary evidence for an engine change was introduced because of concerns expressed by VOSA when assessing kit conversions .
After further consideration it has been agreed with VOSA that pre 1973 vehicles were unlikely to be a source of these concerns and we were therefore able to review the policy.
Documentary evidence to support an engine change for any pre 1973 vehicles will no longer be required irrespective of the cc’s.

I no longer believe anything coming out of the DVLA. When I telephoned a couple of months back regarding a CC change I was told that a letter from myself would be sufficient. A letter from a garage was NOT required. I did as instructed only to receive a telephone call from the DVLA requesting a letter from a garage confirming the CC change. When I informed them that this was not what I had been told they didn't want to know. All they wanted was a bit of scrappy paper from any Joe Bloggs confirming that the CC of the car had been changed.

I had the same thing. I made the changes saying it was a 1275 engine fitted (I didn't want to say 1293, as I thought that would complicate things). The DVLA sent me a letter back saying that I needed a letter from the garage/machine shop stating the EXACT CC of the engine. I did this and it confirmed that it was a 1275 rebored to 1293 (obviously making it a 1293cc).

I then received the logbook back stating it was a 1275.

Its just a waste big of time.
