LBL 590E

Post by spoon.450 »

I was a bit late seeing the current MCR mag, but was interested to see an article on LBL 590E, written by the current, and long term owner. I don't know much about LBL 590E, other than it was the 67 Flowers car for Paddy and Ron, and was famously pushed out of the tunnel to the finish ( as Paddy told me when we were researching the 66 Flowers car, GRX 309D ) so suffered slight rear end damage. There's interesting photos, recent, and from the late 60's showing the boot badging with Austin Cooper script but a Morris 'S'. I'd love to think that this was genuine, and find out more about the car, if anyone can add ?

All I know was that it was a Mk2 when it came up to my Arley Hall works Mini display in the early 90s.

It was a mark 2 at Mini 30

Mark 1 at BMC 50

It was quite common for Abingdon to switch badges from Austin to Morris and visa versa depending on what distributors were used in each country

Haven't read the article myself yet

I think this is the car that has spent a lot of years in the Isle of Wight? I may be wrong but i remember seeing this car and being given a great tour of it by its long term owner who was in the Army at the time back in the 90's. It looked very original to me and the owner literally had a shed full of very rare spares and genuine works parts. Really nice guy and a true enthusiast who was an active member of the MCR. I remember seeing it at Beaulieu either last year or the year before.

It was owned by a different person when it came to Arley in about 1993 and was a Mk2 as pictured above so must have changed shell and ownership perhaps mid 90s when you saw it?

Was it a mk2 in the 80's ?????
From these photos it has a mk2 grille and bonnet badge, but we can't see the back panel. ....although the back window looks quite narrow to me, like a mk 1 ??????

In my humble opinion, John's car is a Mk 1 that had later been 'converted' to later lights as many were.
Now put back. It has not been reshelled from Mk2 to Mk1 as stated above.

Having had a really good look at it in a partially stripped state, I am certain it is a genuine shell as it left Abingdon, and has original Lucas comps wiring loom.

The loom can never have left the car, as the holes are too small, and they were wired in situ as it were.
it is also in truly superb condition.

That's great news Guy, it's good to hear something positive about an ex-works car. Your opinion and knowledge is appreciated and respected.
Thanks for sharing the information.
