2017 UK sprint / hillclimb recommendations

Post by BigWig »

Hi there

I was wondering if anyone can recommend some must do UK sprint / hilllclimb events (or similar), ideally those that attract Mini competitors?

I know you have the Action Day in April but that is sold out. We are bringing an old Free Formula 850 car back out, so it will be good to mix it with similar cars.

Thanks

You don't say where you are. That matters. For example there has long been no hill climb venue in the south east quarter of England (don't mention Goodwood House...).
Capacity classes have long been a 1400 split and 1300 before that, so you will not find "similar" 850 cars. If free formula means complete detachable front body, you would be placed in Sports Libre alongside sports racing cars. Gearing for hill climbs means changing final drive for most sprints and vice versa.
If you can't be remotely competitive, it can be soul destroying to compete against regular cars in regular classes. "Must do" speed events are grossly oversubscribed and there is already enough "bad blood" over organisers accepting "one make" classes/clubs when the entry could be filled with regular class cars. An open test day/track day might be more suitable but don't expect to find many at hill climb venues. You may be welcomed at a sprint on a cold, windy Essex airfield, but don't expect the same at a major hill climb, where regular championship contenders have failed to get entries. Blunt fact: there is little scope for a simple run out in a car that doesn't fit the current class structure.

Make sure you're on the Blyton reserve list (link on the web page!) as you may get in nearer the day.

As for speed events suitable for early Minis, I'm putting a list together for informal Mk1 Performance gatherings currently which I'll post up here shorlty for anyone wishing to enter at the same events. Safe to say it'll include Harewood, Prescott, Shelsley Classic, possibly Loton, Blyton, Boness and Barbon and a couple of track days such as Aintree. More soon!

You would be fine to run at harewood classic and vintage in June, the coldwell twin cam has done it for the last few years in very much 60s trim, I'm sure Bill does other events with it , last year 7 of us entered a class Mark sponsored, cracking craic ! Just a good day out with fellow mini people !

Hi Pete
I went to the HRCR open day on Saturday and saw that their speed series might be worth a look but mainly Saturday events. The first event 8 events is at Aintree on 22nd April with Shelsley on 15th/16th July, Loton Park 5th August, Curborough 12th August and Prescott on 30th September. Closed to club permit (HRCR), standard road going classics, minimal car preparation but in date overalls, gloves and helmet per 2017 MSA Yearbook.

Thanks Cliff, sounds interesting as some of the dates will be on my list anyway but not sure on the standard spec bit? I'll check it out with HRCR.

Here's some of the dates I'm considering for this year (some firm) (Blyton obvs!)

April 30th - Blyton Park (nuff said)

May 13/14th - Ingliston Revival (sprint). Really fancy this! http://www.ingliston.co.uk/revival/

May 27th - Aintree trackday

June 3rd - Harewood Classic & Vintage

June 24th - Prescott

July 22/23rd - Shelsley Walsh Classic Nostalgia ( a must do, usually do the Sunday)

August 5/6th - Loton Park

August 27th/28th - Crystal Palace http://www.motorsportatthepalace.co.uk/

Sept 2nd/3rd - Boness Hillclimb Revival http://www.bonesshillclimb.org.uk/

Sept 30th - Aintree track day

These are just the events I'm interested in, absolutely no way I can do 'em all so will need thinning down so anyone want to pick some out they could be interested in or have any to suggest?? We could have a few get togethers this year.

Left Chumly out cos unless the Friday preview day allows alot more time on track than last year or any of us get an entry on the sprint (unlikely!) it'll be a non starter anyway.

Several sprints at Aintree aswell but the trackdays are so much better value!

Just been in touch with Ingliston regarding an entry, this was the reply, im sure mine and other older Mini's would get through this criteria

STEVEN MURPHY
Hi, Very interested in putting an entry in for the Revival this year, I have a 1960 Mini race car, but at the moment would only be able to enter the Sunday, is that possible or would I have to commit to both days ?

Many thanks

Steve

Anita
Okay, I’m afraid the director for this event in a meeting just now. As far as I am aware, that a would be a possibility! However, I believe we are running on a timeline in regards to the manufacturing dates for the cars - we are looking for cars that have been made between 1965 and 1994.

This is in response to the feedback that we received after the first event in 2015.

I think it may be better to pop us through an email, if possible. I can then pass this on the correct team, so that you have a more definitive response!

Ingliston could be fun for the weekend.
I'd love to see a sprint round Knockhill again almost 2 Laps of the track is the best sprint i've ever done and definitely value for money.

Did you ever do that round of Wigtons Championship Murph?

Adam & I will certainly be doing 3 or 4 events this year.

Blyton & Harewood are Shelsley are certains as long as I can get an entry, and maybe another one or two to be decided on later.

Hopefully MK1 PC will be sponsoring Harewood again like last year.

Good to see a couple of Scottish events mentioned in your list Pete, Hope to see you at Ingliston and Bo'ness (as well as Blyton), but you really should have a crack at Doune. Take a few brave pills first though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kufacVXlSc

The timing of Bo'ness less than a week before leaving for Goodwood was 'noted' when I was filling in the calendar......... LOL

I quite fancy going to Shelsey again. Not sure about Prescott, but might give it a go.
