Fastest Mini in the World Race - 1994

Post by mab01uk »

A few nice shots below taken by 'Pogie' of the Mini Forum (TMF) from the paddock of the 'Fastest Mini in the World' race that was held at Mini 35 at Silverstone in 1994.
Quote:
"The green Autodelta Mini from Japan sadly wasn't allowed to race as it failed scrutineering on quite a few safety issues. The mechanics were working like mad to make up a bulkhead to separate the fuel tank from the driver but they run out of time. It was a shame it didn't run as it had loads of hi-tech features but you would have thought the builders would have checked the UK racing regulations before hauling the car halfway around the world. I doubt if so many race Minis of their type will be bought together in one race ever again."

In the end it was a very close and exciting race between Peter Baldwin (JK) v Bill Sollis (KAD) and the KAD Mini won.

I was at the Silverstone race in 1994 but not sure if I took any photos.....but here is a photo below I took of the Jack Knight 16V Mini in the Brands Hatch paddock in the early 1990's.

The KAD engine from the winning car was purchased by "Northern Mini Parts" here in Australia and was fitted to one of our customers Sports Sedans.
It eventually blew up, was rebuilt a couple of times and now is fitted to another sports sedan that gets used for sprint meetings and hill climbs.

Just joined the forum and saw this thread. I finished 13th in this race and when Bill passed me, it felt like I was standing still. I had qualified I think 11th but had a poor start and couldn't get around a slower mini or possibly I would have finished better. There's always that what if... There was another fellow, from Germany I believe, that towed his race mini with another mini, Pick up, I think, but he wasn't allowed to race because of a race license issue.

By the way, I was driving the Trickey mini. Still have it but hasn't been started since 2001.

Hi and welcome to the forum Ron, you probably know a few of us on here from when you were in the UK.....you might like to take a look at the 'American Pickers' thread (see link below) where you get a mention along with some photos. :D

Thanks, I saw that. Graham Robinson emailed me today. He had gotten my info from Chuck Heleker who got it from someone local to me. I've been out of the loop for awhile. Last Mini meet I did was in 2000 in Florida. Been thinking about selling the Trickey mini, but looking at this forum and old racing pictures has got me wondering about that now.

I am into classic American cars now. Seems like I'm always finding "barn" finds. The Trickey mini could be considered a barn find. In 2002 I bought a 1931 Ford hot rod from a small museum. The 31 was built in 57 and was a genuine 50s hot rod. Five years ago I sold it to buy a 1955 Ford Gasser that had been on a shelf for 43 years. Also had a 57 Chevy wagon that was in a magazine in 1974. It was apart and I sold it last year. Almost forgot about my 1950 Ford I bought in 1995 that had sat from 1962 to 92. I put over 80k miles on that one. But this is all off topic.

I just got done reading a lot of the thread about the works rally mini that was found in a barn. I saw the re-shelled one racing in Florida in the 70s. I'll have to find some pics of it. It was running the registration number on it.
Think I'll try to get the Trickey mini out one of these days and do something with it.
Many of my friends have threatened to call American Pickers to come to my place. They would need a big truck.

The Delta did run the race. Was allowed to do 3 laps timed before race. But was way of pace during the race. Think it went into pit after just 3 or 4 laps.
