HSCC Walter Hayes Closed Wheel Race Pictures
I went down to Silverstone to Watch Tim Harber wrap up his race season at the HSCC Walter Hayes Meeting. Was it cold? Yes, I even took a coat. Tim was out in his 7-port, some may remember it from Blyton.
When I got to the circuit Julian was swapping a plug as the car was only running on 3. After another check we did the old wet finger on the manifold trick and worked out which pot was to blame.
After changing another plug it was time for qualifying, Tim hoped that the problem would clear when he got out on track. Spectating on the pit exit straight it was obvious that the problem was still there, as Tim was being passed by everyone, including an A30.
After completing the 3 laps required to get a place on the grid Tim pulled in. By the time Julian and I got back Tim had the tools out of the van. After checking for a spark on the dodgy pot we changed the plug lead. After a quick test around the paddock and over Bridge all appeared good.
Due to the poor running obviously Tim qualified last on the grid, but that meant he would have an exciting time getting through the pack. With a cold track everyone was having trouble with grip. On lap one the Elan started a chain reaction...
Fortunately everyone got round as 82 spun.
There were some good dices all through the field including this Merlyn and Camaro, who battled for the lead and swapped places almost every lap. The Camaro didn't make it, coming to a halt on the Wellington straight on the final lap.

Most interesting car of the day was this Lotus XI GT Breadvan. Restored a few years ago after last being raced with the van body at Goodwood in 1964.
More info on this Lotus can be found here http://www.sucksqueezebangblow.co/2014/ ... advan.html
Another historical vehicle to be seen was this Chevy Camaro, as driven by Al Unser in the 1978 IROC series. It must be a right pig to drive with those monster tyres on the front!

Chris is a member on here I think, his grandad can be seen racing a red and white Cooper S on that recently discovered clip of saloon racing at Aintree.Nevsmini wrote: Two other mini men were also competing in the WHT, Jonathan Lewis and Chris Middlehurst.
