The story was very muddled in the programme - they said this was the 'launch' '58 show car, but the Elite was launched at the '57 show, that car was the hand built prototype (sharing the Lotus stand with the new Seven S1). The '57 car was built using moulds pulled from the hand built plaster prototype.
By '58 it would have been a 'production' model, albeit it took a while to sort it out (if they ever did!), so shouldn't have been too full of plod. Can't imagine Chapman liking that idea, either on cost or weight grounds!
Ortenburger's book on the Elite is great if you like the model (who doesn't?, it's top of my 'want' but never going to happen list) and even includes copies of the production ledger seen in the book for all the anoraks - like me!

Took the car apart a la dinky toy . The shell went off as a spaceframe grass track car and the front end may be lurking near us now in a new form
