LATEST EARTHQUAKE IN NZ

Post by mk1 »

I am sure that most people will have heard about the massive earthquake that hit Christchurch in New Zealand yesterday. We have a number of active members in that area & I would like to say that my thoughts are with them at this very difficult time.

On a more practical level. anyone wishing to make a donation to the disaster appeal can find details here;

I know that Kiwis are among the most resilient folks in the world & wish you the very best of luck!

Thanks for your thoughts guys,

I am ok, and i have heard that Al(66S) is ok too.

The death toll is going to be well over 100, just going through people i know and hoping they are ok too, it's a smallish city so a lot of us are affected. cell coverage has been patchy too.

I was in a hotel basement minutes before the quake hit, and when it did, i was in a van that i thought was going to fall over.

Thanks for thinking of us out here!

We are in Wgtn so weren't effected. James (ka2s4) reports no damage at his place but he was in the city at the time and said it was unbelievable. Al (66S) I have not heard from but understand his lot are OK but have a big mess - at a guess I would say it might mean his business as most of the damage this time seems to be in the city.

Paul (AustinCostin) lives in the country so would imagine is OK. SteveG is from down there too and is in the suburbs I think so should be OK.

News reports look grim tonight - maybe 200-400 killed? Very sad.

Thanks for your kind thoughts guys, were all OK, suffered damage to house and belongings but as said this is rather insignificant when you look at the loss of life.
I was at work at the time and had just walked outside of the very large concrete slab building I work in, its just amazing how much movement the building had and the tarmac car park looked like the sea with the waves rolling in :?
VERY SCARY.

My thoughts go out to all the people who have loved ones still not accounted for.

Very pleased every one, and all their families are OK! They say that the lateral ground acceleration peaked at about I.8G  (if my sums are right that's about 41mph)

Thanks for your messages. We are o.k with everyone accounted for and o.k - very stressful as the kids (5 of them!!) were scattered all over Christchurch at the time. Pleased to hear other Christchurch members are o.k, I hope none of you have suffered too much damage and all those close to you are accounted for..

We have had minor damage to property...although my office got trashed (again) and I won't be printing anything for a while as large format priners and computer monitors werer never meant to fly......very thankful that none of this stuff hit me.

Minor damage to both cars, but nothing a session with the touch up paint won't fix....

Thankful to be alive along with family and friends...

Thanks for the thoughts guys. Our house was badly damaged in the last quake and will probably be torn down. I never go home for lunch. Yesterday I did and the quake struck while I was inside. Very very scary and bought me to tears looking at the devastation on TV. Its nearly 6 months since the last big one and we were still getting aftershocks from that. Someone somewhere doesn't like us. This is shit.

Hard to say how the city will rebuild this, but it will. The strength of the people is amazing and we will band together to get through it.

A elderly couple live next door to me. They have been ill since the Sep quake and the Husband was rushed to hospital in the middle of the night last week. He had a stroke probably due to the stress. After the 1st shock yesterday I went round there and had to kick their gate in as their wall had fallen on it. I got into the house and they were under the table scared to death. It brakes your heart. At their time of life they don't need this. I came out their front door to be greeted by another major aftershock 30 mins after the big one. I watched as my house swayed from side to side with water gushing out the roof.

Minis are OK again. I haven't heard from the Rust guy where the 59 is right now. Will make contact soon.

Thanks again for the good wishes, it gives us strength to see the world wide help we are receiving.

I received an e-mail from Al (66S) this morning, he, his family & cars are all OK, he says that his house has been messed up a bit though.

Sounds like all forum members are thankfully OK.

Al was quite close to this one. I noticed one of the aftershocks was in a road behind him. He tells me his cars are fine but yes, house is a bit of a mess

some of the scenes on the news last night where amazing, there was some footage in a house whilst the shake was going on,

and that office block that had collapsed, i wonder if there are going to be some awkward questions with the people who designed it?
please note, these are my own, individual sales, nothing whatsoever to do with my employer, minispares
