Re: WTH??!?! Have you seen this item on ebay.
What raised my suspicion is the location of the regulator box , missing vin tag ,no servo , no breather pipe tabs beside the rh tank and looks like it had an under hood heater blower.
Wouldnt a 66 have come with a rh tank, plus an oil cooler?
Please correct me if I'm wrong ......
If the body number matches a heritage certificate for an "S" then good to go ....
Looks like a good project for some one .

It definitely looks like a good project. But maybe not as a genuine Cooper S.Craig wrote:What raised my suspicion is the location of the regulator box , missing vin tag ,no servo , no breather pipe tabs beside the rh tank and looks like it had an under hood heater blower.

Apart from the engine all other items which make the difference between a Cooper and a Cooper S seems to be doubtful. Additionaly to the above mentioned the bonnet badge seems to be a little high, as it was basically installed without the "S" on top.
Yes a 66' Cooper S came with standard rh tank and oil cooler.

Most likely a cooper shell / car, with some S bits added, but whatever it is, it looks like a superb basis for a project.

As far as I know a late 65 build Cooper S would be a single tank car and could easily have been upgraded. According to the blurb it is a December 65 build date.Craig wrote:What raised my suspicion is the location of the regulator box , missing vin tag ,no servo , no breather pipe tabs beside the rh tank and looks like it had an under hood heater blower.

Yepp, I agree with that. But in that case it should have the early door handles without safety boss too.rolesyboy wrote: As far as I know a late 65 build Cooper S would be a single tank car and could easily have been upgraded. According to the blurb it is a December 65 build date.
I like it.
According history files, the change point for door handles, oil cooler and rh tank are the same.

I thought the change/upgrage from early door handles without the boss was a safety measure introduced in 1963. Some of the Mini boffs on here will know more than me but pretty sure that's right

No, door bosses were much later than 63. More like 66.
My 65 Speedwell S had the original thin type.

Re: WTH??!?! Have you seen this item on ebay.
Not sure a December 65 car would have had some of the 66 998 Cooper features on this car though as has been said single tank would right. As has been said if the body number plate is the original and it matches, that's enough of a smoking gun for most. It's certainly alot more convincing (not saying it's genuine) than that hastily "Cooperised" tatty green 1071 (64 850) that went on Ebay recently for £33K! More fool them I say but then not everyone sp*nking £33K on an 850 gives a sh*t obviously, each to their own!

Re: WTH??!?! Have you seen this item on ebay.
I agree that the safety bosses came later (although could be retro-fitted of course?). My 1965 Cooper didn't have them but my 1966 car did. The regulator position is wrong though isn't it for an "S"? Mine was on its side and behind the strengthening brace.
I thought the odd rear number plate lights and one or two other details suggested a car which had been abroad for some of its life?
As others have said - a good project but maybe not an original "S"?

The number plate light positions are the same as the '90s Jap import 1275 I've just bought.Old English White wrote:I agree that the safety bosses came later (although could be retro-fitted of course?). Weren't the door bosses and slightly larger handles introduced in January '66, the same time as twin tanks as standard on all S's..?

Re: WTH??!?! Have you seen this item on ebay.
Looks like a Cooper that's been S'd up in the past to me.
Regulator position and normal Mk1 fresh air hose says it all, coupled with the other 'absent but included' or incorrect parts (speedo) fitted.
Late 65 would have had the fresh air hose with reducer.
Can't see a tapper chest breather either
It's a great project even if it isn't a real S

Worth remembering that all glass and most Lucas electrical items are dated if anyone is going to have a good look at it - as well as the all important body number of course

Re: WTH??!?! Have you seen this item on ebay.
Plus the riveted brackets, swivel visors and other details that would give a '65 car away. I wouldn't pay big money for a car with an identity crisis but it's no biggy to most as by far the vast majority of Mk1 Ss Ive ever clapped eyes on have been reshelled/reimagined, sometimes very carefully done and sometimes blatant. This one does smell fishy there's no doubt, like that green 1071 ringer recently, all the bits that make an S different from a standard Mk1 just so happened to be either brand new, have been lost or replaced wrongly but everything else looks original. Cars like this tell their own story and you pays your money and you takes your choice, some buyers wont be interested so long as the 'numbers match'.Old English White wrote:Worth remembering that all glass and most Lucas electrical items are dated if anyone is going to have a good look at it - as well as the all important body number of course

Lovely car, but shame it's not what it says on the tin.

It also has a pre 1963 type rocker cover (metal cap type which has been fitted with the plastic cap). Interesting no photo of the mastercylinders...
