I have spoken to the Policeman who inspected this car. He says he was unable to find any identification on the car apart from the vin plate from the 1968 car. In view of the fact that there is nothing on the shell to identify the car he says there is no evidence that the car has not just been modified through the years, so is therefore correctly registered. Only thing he found illegal was that it was wrongly registered as 1000cc and if it had been on a public road at the time of inspection states the insurance would have possibly been invalid, which he could have done something about. He was not aware of the possibility of there being a vin number stamped into the scuttle or of the differences between a 1968 saloon shell and a 1990's Cabriolet shell. So it seems ok to put any id on a car as long as you remove any evidence of it's true identity!!!!!!!

Oh dear. He wasn't really the right person for the job then was he   It isn't THAT difficult to gain a bit of knowledge is it? I thought Police Forces nowadays each had a few specialist officers for this sort of task?

And the irony is the DVLA recently refused my application for a Mk1 Cooper and STG's Mk2 Coopwr which are both pukka cars just because they're deemed 'incomplete'. Mine failed cos my rear screen was out and I'd removed the seats and engine. (but were present). It's a complete joke when you see cars like that or exotic cars built from a dash panel. Basically if you are dishonest and know how to play the system there's nothing to stop you building anything that takes your fancy or claiming a logbook for anything you want to fake.

I'm having similar problems with my 1960 Mk1. It has no id what so ever but can be dated to within a few months as it has early floors and foam filled sills but recessed windscreen but I am told that there is no way of getting it registered by DVLA. I want to do everything correctly so don't know how to get round this. It really annoys me when someone puts such an obvious false id on a car and gets away with it.

Can you not get a letter from a recognised club dating the car?

I've been to a recognised club and they say they can't do it without the vin number or an FE number. It was that club that accurately dated it for me as July to October 1960 build.

The behaviour of some of those 'recognised clubs' is half the problem! I presume you've looked for a number on the angled stiffener? It's fair to say if you play it straight you'lll often find yourself up against it but if you slap a donor chassis plate / logbook on it you'll have no issues.

Yes, can't find anything on the stiffener. Have been looking for a rotten donor car of the right age to rebuild with my shell but was also told this couldn't be done legitimately. Would welcome any advise or help, please pm me.

. There's only one thing for it, you'll just have apply for the V5 for a famous and valuable Mk 1 Cooper S.

Please be careful what is said publicly in this thread.

It is getting dangerously close to becoming a "soliciting for a log book" thread.

These are not allowed on the MK1 forum.

It was supposedly bought from P & L Minis about 18 months ago for 'a lot of money'. I don't know anything about their reputation.

I'm not sure about the DLVA people, I have a friend who owns a very original complete Mini Super and he cannot get the original registration back to this car which beggars belief.

It is factual to say a large percent of Cooper S type cars have been built from a registration document and in real terms they are imitation (replica) cars. I did some research on standard Cooper S type Minis some years ago and found a very low volume of the survivors were authentic original built cars. The works car question is far worse and blights the Mini landscape without question. For some reason a large percent of the Mini world seem not to give one jot about what is a genuine car and what is total fake. I sometimes think time to move my genuine cars on as I have been to shows where fake kit cars are treated as the real thing and in some cases win most original car of the event. There are so many people out there who would not know a genuine car from a lawnmower. :x
