Sanwa Trophy/Pre-66 Challenge

Post by Paul999 »

Hi

Is anyone here doing these races? I'll be there for my first ever race in a Mini (and in a FWD car, and in a car with a roof) so a steep learning curve ahead!

Cheers, Paul

I'm not going this year, but the sanwa is a really good event.

the brands indy circuit is fantastic and just suits minis so well

oh, and stay out the gravel at paddock hill, its fricking deep (and if you do get into it, try and keep the car going straight!)
should you wish, you can contact me on rich@minispares.com

Thanks Rich; really looking forward to it.

You're right about the gravel, I dropped a Formula Ford in there and nearly had to wade out...

I'm in! There's another pretty cool trophy up for grabs in the SU Carbs pre 66 Euro Challenge race...
See you there.

I see Endaf just beat Swifty in the first race, looked like a good battle, close over the line !,

The Sanwa was fraught..... The Mini challenge lot were out just before chucking oil all over the place (and I mean, literally all over the place - not a corner was dry!). The first few laps were very interesting with the lack of grip and the cement dust. Unfortunately I didn't finish due to the rear camber bracket coming loose and the tyre rubbing itself to death on the ARB - made for some interesting handling though paddock!

Great race format though, it was nice to stand in the pits and watch the pit-stops unfold. Total chaos - loved it!

It is, thank you for the pics!

I missed third and buzzed the engine slightly. A pushrod is bent so I suspect a damaged valve. I'll get the head off this weekend and check the pistons - fingers crossed.

Great weekend though - really nice people and the car's a hoot to drive. Very alien at first compared to single-seaters!

Sorry, not me! I was 99 in the Pre-66 Challenge so I can't claim that one!

I did run with him through Paddock (briefly) in testing which was rather nice :D

Hi Luis

Really appreciate the offer, but I don't think you're talking about my car! Mine was originally a genuine Cooper S delivered to Sweden. It did a few rallies in the nineties with (dodgy) FIA papers. I bought it purporting to be an FIA rally car so my wife and I could do a couple of rallies together (I was racing historic Formula Ford at the time). We soon realised this was a very bad idea, as she's not very good at maths and I'm not very patient, so I built it up as a racing car, only to find it had a bent engine, running hi-los, etc, so it took a bit longer than planned.

I've never raced saloons, FWD, or even a car with a roof before so its been a steep learning curve, but really good fun. I wasn't sure if I'd keep the car long before I went back to single-seaters, but everyone was so nice and it was such a giggle to drive I think I might have to.

Ok :) so there were two 99 cars, you Paul on the SU Carb Challenge, and another one ( Kevin O'connor ) on the endurance race.
