Head Conversion Question??

Post by TO THE FLOOR »

Hi:

I have a morris cooper with a 1275 gt motor bored to 1293. Currently I have a 12G940 head on it. I decided to put on a AEG163 head, the cooper s one with the big valves... I already started tearing it down this afternoon and now I'm wondering if I will notice any performance improvement??

Thanks

If they are both standard, then NO.

I agree with Vegard (Rare nowadays ;)

If all other things are equal & the heads are not modified then there will be no noticeable performance improvement.

TBH nowadays, with good 163's becoming harder to find it seems a shame to put it on a mongrel engine just to see what it does. A better bet would be to find a later, cheaper and MUCH more readily available12G1805 MK3 S head, which also has larger valve sizes than the standard 1300 940 head and also offers no performance improvement over the standard item in standard trim :)

Thanks guys. This head has been sitting around here for about 15 years and I have everything so no cost. Sorry I have had a stroke so I can't remember it all but the engine has been done and upgraded with HIF 44 and and I think LCB on the exhaust with a straight pipe and supertrap. Cam is AEG 643. Car has been my baby for almost 40 years. Everything is new on the head and it may have been trimmed I just don't remember anymore. It also has S rockers instead of the sinterned ones. I figured it was kind of like getting a valve job done and now that I started pulling everything apart it's too late to go back. Actually, I figured it would be more of a shame to let it sit wrapped in a drawer in my garage without using it. Worst part for me is that since Sept 2009 I have only put 436 miles on the mini. Where does time go??

Hi To The Floor,

I'm very sorry to hear about your illness & hope that you are making a good recovery.

As you say, getting it on an engine is probably more important that "preserving" it for the "right" unit.

I would be very interested to hear what difference it makes or indeed, how well it goes.

Best regards, mark

After reading Vizard today I would say the 12G940 has a better chance of being modified. Found it off Minimania from a guy in Florida (from Britain) who was all into flow testing the mini heads, and was looking to keep his business afloat. I think he was modifying it for me but now I don't remember. The S head I think I also found off of Minimania...and really don't remember the details except I had it shipped from the UK and "it was done". Well really I don't remember much of either and never wrote anything down...so who knows. It's gone now.

If I didn't tell a friend (with 12 more years into the minis than I) to come over and hang out while I worked on this...I would be done by now. But, I'm giving it a week or so and all the little doctors a chance to give me back my license cause when the mini is done I'm going out driving. There are enough idiots on the road...one more won't matter.

Finally finished on the 4th, and topped it off with a Minifin rocker cover today.
