970s Engine Head stamps

Post by 1064overbore »

Hi there,

I've got a 970S engine in my shed which happens to have some numbers stamped into the head. Its evidently a race engine, its +0.60, huge valves, ported and polished, lightened S rockers and so forth, but do these numbers mean anything to anyone on here?

I've attached a photo.

Thanks in advance!

426 = Job Number
16.4 = Combustion Chamber size (when originally modified)
100 = Amount skimmed of head in thousands of a inch.

It's not Downton. Job number is to low for a 940 head

I agree on the job number being too low for a downton head. I said it too soon, sorry.

But the stamping style does look the real deal.

Not a problem! its clearly not been built by a herbert, just interested to find out a bit more about it.

Could it be a Longman head? They 100 and 16.4 line up but the job number is maybe a bit low to tie in with two I have. Is it a AEG163 or 12G940 head ?

It's a 940 Al the 163 doesn't have this lump on the left hand side of the head.

Thanks Nev, I never thought about that. Well, that makes Longman a bigger possibility.
