Help identify Rear Anti Roll Bar
Hello,
I have the remnants of a Rear Anti Roll Bar fitted to my old Colgate race car and was curious to see if anyone could identify the make and model.
It was installed by the folks at Richard Miles Downton London in early 1967 for a Group 2 race car they prepared.
I am wanting to collect as many of the original type items they fitted and it would be great to know what I am looking for in seeking out the missing pieces.
I have not seen any markings on the bits I have.
The parts mounted near the rear backing plates look very similar to what comes with the Minispares rear bar.
The brackets mounted to the front part of the sub frame seem quite substantial compared to whats available now.
Here are a few pictures of what I have.
Thank you for any thoughts.

Re: Help identify Rear Anti Roll Bar
Need to check, but on first glance it looks like the remains of the Special tuning expensive rose jointed anti roll bar.

Re: Help identify Rear Anti Roll Bar
Well Johnny,
Firstly i can see why you "have the remnants" of the anti roll bar, it was fitted the wrong way around!!!
The mounting tubes should be near the rear valance! It's no Special tuning bit but who made them isn't really sure.
They were offered by some companies like Jonspeed, Cooper and did appear on a Special tuning board (Picture with Makkinen sitting next to one springs to mind)
You're missing the square bar across, the blades going from that to the wheels the rose jointed linkage from the blades to wheels and the big rose joints that hold the bar onto the tubes fitted to the subframe.
chance of getting these parts? second to none as rockinghorse poo and hens teeth are the words here.
Found a picture;

http://img.xooimage.com/files83/3/7/9/t ... 4fd75d.jpg
BUT the blade is normally straight and the rose joint mounting is on the wrong side (the joint should be next to the blade.)
You get the idea anyway!
Jack

Re: Help identify Rear Anti Roll Bar
As Tulka's picture shows in August 1966 somebody drew that for Cooper but there is photographic evidence of one fitted as early as January 1966.
This is Silverstone January 1966 and look at the rear of the dark car.
So did Cooper copy it from somebody else?
Tulka, I would be interested to see more of the drawing (s)

Re: Help identify Rear Anti Roll Bar
I dont think it is on the wrong way Think of the history of this car and the originality.
Johnny I have always known this as a Coopers it was fitted to my car but I did not use one (perhaps I should of )
I have also seen them where the radius links were lightened.

Re: Help identify Rear Anti Roll Bar
The mountings are fitted wrongly. As pointed out, the angled brackets with the tubes are supposed to be fitted to the rear of the sub frame behind the spring boss. Its why it's angled. This allows the roll bar to sit up out the way and not hit the ground on every rock on a special stage etc. Possibly the roll bar has been fitted by a Ferrari F1 engineer of the period.
Special tuning used to list 2 anti roll bars, the expensive rose jointed one shown and the much cheaper rubber bushed one that sat across the front of the sub frame with the exhaust above it. The style being typical of most marketed mini anti roll bars.

Re: Help identify Rear Anti Roll Bar
Yes I see what you mean that's right they fit on the rear of the sub frame. I didn't take a lot of notice of Johnny's pic, I just took more notice of the ones that you linked to, and went to my WS and lifted mine down (after 36 years hanging on a shelf) in case Johnny went looking for bent radius links.
I think Mark used to have a picture of one on the web site (not fitted on a car).

Re: Help identify Rear Anti Roll Bar
Thank you very much for all the pictures and comments, you guys are amazing.
This is really confusing why it would be fitted the wrong way around. I assume it was fitted originally but am not sure. Must be one of Richard Miles speed secrets.
There are no holes at the rear of the subframe either to suggest that it was relocated at some point. There is just nice black subframe paint under where the other improperly installed mount was located.
Thanks again,
Johnny

Re: Help identify Rear Anti Roll Bar
Just to add my 2 pennorth.
It does look like what it called the Special Tuning or Cooper Car Co ARB. I cannot comment on it being fitted incorrectly, as I don't know. But I would say that things being fitted incorrectly by an "expert" is by no means unheard of.
If it was fitted by Richard Miles, it would also point to it being a Cooper / ST one. As Downton used very few parts that weren't "factory" or from the close circle of Daniel Richmond's buddies.
Getting the missing bits manufactured would not be too difficult.

Re: Help identify Rear Anti Roll Bar
I've got one. I helped fit it to friends car that I used to help prepare, he didn't like it and I bought it off him.
So, does anyone think I don't know how it fits?

Re: Help identify Rear Anti Roll Bar
I have not fitted the bar as standard, but a lot better than shown in the original photos. After all, I am not a Ferrari F1 engineer

Re: Help identify Rear Anti Roll Bar
Just so their is no ambiguity the brackets on my car were as Ivor states fitted as the red lines on the attachment, but where it is fitted on a racer could possibly of been used to tune the performance of the set up, depending on the length and position of the radius links and conecting rods. The car in period was very succsessful.

Re: Help identify Rear Anti Roll Bar
The Cooper one only cost £17 19s and 6d in 1967 that is probably a weeks wage!

Re: Help identify Rear Anti Roll Bar
As I pointed out "the expensive one". I only bought it as a 2nd hand deal.Ronnie wrote:The Cooper one only cost £17 19s and 6d in 1967 that is probably a weeks wage!
